In response to this thread, I have just run Win Updates on this WinME test bed and been offered two updates: KB 888113 & KB 891711, the possible problematic updated being discussed here. I can't get it to run without failing and returning many error messages, although Scandisk is okay in Safe Mode. I'm still reluctant to apply the patch, even though I am no longer running any Norton products. As with other updates, this one DOES create a restore point (for those that fail to do so manually), doesn't it? Heirloom, old and EZ AV is working for me "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... (OK, I'll say it - blame Norton!! They've managed to f^&* up everything else in ME, so why should this patch be any different??) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Galen" wrote in message ... In , heirloom had this to say: My reply is at the bottom of your sent message: I am seeing a lot of references to this particular update causing problems with a common denominator of NAV (or related Symantec product). When installing this update, does it not create a restore point? And, yes, due to the nature of NAV, it would be necessary to reinstall after a System Restore. Has anyone pinned this on the use of Symantec products??....or is there still a chance it is browser related?? Heirloom, old and holding off on this one No one has had the gaul to blame NAV yet though I've been leaning towards it. My biggest problem is taking it out on a single company when there are too many variables. I'd absolutely hate to be the person who caused a large group of people to switch to more effective solutions. Well, okay, I would... But I do try to examine ALL potentials before jumping out and saying it's NAV. However this does seem to be the one constant among most of the posts... I think, my good sir, that Heirloom shall be the bearer of bad news on this one See also the number of threads in the 98 group. The update is specifically about this: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/Sec.../ms05-002.mspx It's only available via the updates site itself for 9x/ME. Some have trouble, some do not... Methinks if I were more carefully oriented I could go back and cite examples to SUPPORT your NAV claim my good sir. Indeed it seems likely as I browse through my answers which are highlighted and flagged to appear on top. However, I'm not tellin' all of 'em! They'll lynch me! I'm only 31 and have a wife and 2 kids! Besides, I'm a coward :P You tell 'em... Galen -- Signature changed for a moment of silence. Rest well Alex and we'll see you on the other side. |

Well I thought I would add my problems too which appear to be somewhat
different from thos eperienced by others. After downloading the critical updates (both of the below) together with a couple of updates for media player and one for IE6, I too have had horrendous problems. Starting with an inability to close down (hung on blank screen before the "It is now safe..." message while trying to restart after the updates to not being able to boot up for everal tries). After starting windows, the PC started to freeze after a few minutes. Alt+contrl+del did nothing. Nothing moved and no response to anything so had to pull the plug. Trying to copy files to my (large) USB disc had the same problem - everything froze. I first ran in selective start up and managed to stop it loading and windows loaded - unchecked it in msconfig startup and that allowed me to get the pc running at least. I uninstalled the KB891711 via control panel (no response, it just disappeared from the list) but the pC still kept freezing and still having the same problems tranferring from drive to drive. After several restarts it seems to be stable again but we will see. It also deleted all my restore points bar one (Aug 2004 for some reason - I haven't figured out why it left that one). The point is, I haven't and never have had any of Norton's products on the PC (even on free trial) - I use TrendMicro as a virus scanner. It also froze the PC during an AdAware scan (I presume that was the cause - never had these problems before). All in all very confusing and worrying. Not much point having the protection if the PC doesn't work! That's all I can think of for now, I have been trying to sort this since I downloaded the thing last night. Hillneerg "TomV" wrote: Restore points were created for both KB888113 and KB891711 when I applied the updates using Windows Update. I've had no problems since installing the patches on the 9th. heirloom wrote: Thanks go to Jack, Mike and Norman for the input. Norman and Jack for ruling out NAV and Mike for the continued support. Odd that an SR point is set for some and not others. It would be interesting to see if the lack of an SR point is common to those with the problems... Heirloom, old and still hesitant |

Ken Bland Not yet, Kevin, but I un-checked this subject patch from the startup list and ScanDefrag ran just fine. I have another post later down that supports my contention that KB891711 is also responsible for failure to properly shut down the computer. Believe me, I am aware of the Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc fallacy and am subject to it. I am trying to avoid making a firm conclusion yet. Kan Bland |

Many thanks for all the inputs. As for me I have to say that I have no Nav
installed. I am using the free edition of AVG which for itself causes the error as follows: C:\window\applicationData\AVG 7\log folder contains incorrect info about 'emc.log'. something about the size being different than what is recorded. At any rate regarding the KB891711.EXE I simply rolled back the restor point. Although the said file is still in the add/remove programs and also in the startup folder and checked which I unchecked. So, what does this mean? the patch has created restore point but after choosing it successfully the file still remains :-). I am baffled. Once again I have no Nav. "Justin Thyme" wrote: Dang!
