Default Windows Update error help!

Hello!

When I download these 3 updates below I restart my
computer and then go back to windows update and they are
still there ready to be downloaded again. How can I
download these and keep them on the computer? I ordered
the Security Update CD and it still wouldn't update these
three. I didn't get an error message with windowUpdate on
the web but I did with the CD. The error message is "INF
Install failure. Reason: The specified Path is Invalid."

Windows Millennium Edition:
-Update for windows media player 9 series (KB837272)

Critical Updates & Service Packs:
-Critical update for Internet explorer 6 service pack 1
(KB831167)
-Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer 6
Serivce pack 1 (KB832894)

The 3 updates you cite are not on the CD. Are you installing the
updates directly from Windows Update or are you saving them to disk
and then installing ? Is your antivirus program running in the
background ?
If you're attempting the install from Windows Update you will find
an error message associated with the failed installations in the
Windows Update.log found in the WINDOWS folder.
If you're attempting to install from disk you will have to open the
iuhist.xml file found in Program Files\Windows Update\V4 to locate
error codes for the failed installations.

Default Windows Update error help!

Thank you for helping me, I hope this isn't to much
information =)

Are you installing the updates directly from Windows

Update or are you saving them to disk and then installing ?

I have tried both installing directly and saving them to
my disk from Windows Update and then I would restart my
computer, then go back to Windows Update and they would
still be there telling me I need to download them again.

Is your antivirus program running in the background ?

No.

If you're attempting the install from Windows Update

you will find an error message associated with the failed
installations in the Windows Update.log found in the
WINDOWS folder.

Here is my log when I try to install the 2 IE updates the
only error I see is "Set Restore Point":

Default Windows Update error help!

Melissa,

To see what is happening with system restore you might want to try the
following quick test:
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?

If you encounter errors post back and Mow or myself will try and help you get
SR back working correctly for you.

Default Windows Update error help!

after my last reply I thought about the error with system
restore and did some more searching because when I did try
to run system restore it gave me the error message contain
here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
kbid=274092 So I followed the instructions and my system
restore opens up now. So I went to Windows Update and
installed those 3 updates and it worked! They installed
and never showed up again for me to install! Thanks for
all the advice to help me figure this one out!

but one more question do I need the wininit.xxx file
anymore? is it safe to delete?

You did really well, Melissa ... nice job !!
Yes, you don't *need* the file and it is safe to delete it. It's
presence means that whatever was being installed did not complete
it's installation and their was a system file change pending . My
guess is that this would have been an update from Windows Update
that required a reboot.
