Default regedit corrupt

Sorry if this got posted twice. I can't tell if it went through the first time.

I have an older ME PC and need to run software that does not install under
XP. It does install under ME, but at the end I get an error message that my
Regedit is corrupt and that I need to reinstall it. Otherwise the PC runs
fine, so I don't want to reinstall the OS. Is there somewhere where I can
find a good copy of regedit, and how would I install it?

Thanks in advance.

Win Me contains no file named regedit.com, instead it uses regedit.exe. I
am however somewhat surprised that this file is corrupt and even more so
that an installer should tell you this although some malware is known to
delete this file so as to make removing the malware more difficult.

REGEDIT.EXE is part of the Win Me operating system and you should be able
to extract a new copy from WIN_17.CAB which is in the Win9x folder on a
Win Me CD or in either C:\Windows\Options\Install or
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs although some OEMs are known to have placed the
cab folder containing the Win Me cab set in other locations. Therefore if
you don't find win_17.cab in one of those locations try searching the PC.
You should be able to extract the file by double clicking win_17.cab to
open it, highlight regedit.exe and then drag a copy to the windows folder.

Default Rcv: critical registry error, corrup with pop ups .Me 2000.. a

I can not find the back CDs to return the system to the manufactors'
settings. I have tried to use the Registry clean up located within the ME
system 2000, but it has made things worst...slow opening of windows, pop
ups, accessing email takes forever- or not... I am also recieving pop ups from
unsafe websites : ACT NOW! We have detected 55 critical errors on your
registry ! "... what can I do?

What registry clean-up tool did you use? Win Me does not have one other
than scanreg which can be run to fix a small number of errors, is that
what you used?

What problems were you having that you initially were trying to fix?
Pop-ups are a function of the sites you visit and to prevent these when
running Win Me you need to use a third party pop-up blocker. If the
system is slow when connected to the net this might suggest that you have
unwanted malware present. Have you thoroughly checked your system using a
decent anti-virus application with updated signatures? The word "decent"
excludes any offerings from either Norton or McAfee.

receiving pop ups from unsafe websites : ACT NOW! We have detected 55
critical errors on your registry ! "... what can I do?

Exit the site immediately by closing your browser. As you already realise
the messages you are seeing are spoofs and an attempt to get you to click
buttons and download and install malicious spyware.
