You can restore mspqm.sys with a clean copy from the Win Me cab files as
follows:

Mspqm.sys is contained in DRIVERS6.CAB of the Win Me cab set and can be
replaced by booting to Safe Mode and using MSConfig | General | Extract
File and following the prompts. The "cab" files are in the Win9x folder
on the Win Me CD and normally also in either Windows\Options\Cabs or
Windows\Options\Install. See MS KB 265371 - "How to Extract and Replace
a Protected File in Windows Me" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=265371)
for details of how to extract files from the cab set.

Mspqm.sys belongs in the windows\system32\drivers folder.

Alternatively you can use system restore to restore your system to the
state it was in before this file went missing, provided that that was not
more than a few days ago.

Just out of curiosity, how do you think you lost this file? I ask as it
is one of the core Win Me system files that are protected by Win Me's
system file protection mechanism and can't normally just be deleted.

My mother lost the file by simply doing Windows Update and
letting MS have control for a while. Whadda ya think about
that?

I think you are incorrect as to the cause of the problem. I am unaware of
any update from the Windows Update site that would touch this file but if
you know different I'd be happy to have the details in case someone else
has a similar problem in the future. As far as I can recall none have in
the past since Win Me was launched which would suggest that something
unusual happened. Out of curiosity does the file sfplog.txt in the
C:\Windows\System\SFP folder make any reference to this file?

I've had this same problem since I reinstalled earlier this yr ... no
matter how many times I re-do my PC the file is always missing after I
run updates... the culprit seems to be "ACTIVE X" when I install this
the file is missing ... help help .. and Yes ! I do have ME ... is it from
the floppy I use ? the 3 recovery disks are the original which came with
the machine ... IS IT A pack/bell FAULT WITHIN THE BOOT EMOVE FLOPPY ?
any info would be helpful.. I have tried to update the driver !!
many thanks
Kate

'....when I reinstalled' - how did you do the reinstall? - clean, or
over-the-top?
What version of IE is showing in Help|About?

If you formatted the PC (or just the C: Drive), then it was a clean
install - if you just used a Restore disk, you'll have to remember which
option you took, and read the manual
(judging from your IE status, I'd say you did a reformat/reinstall)

Have you managed to follow Mike's instructions on replacing the file - did
it work?

Do a Search for files named 'MSPQM' (without the quotes!) - what is found? -
what are the dates of the files?
What are the version numbers?(r-click on the file icon, and select
Properties)
