Your startup disk should have given you options to start either

1. Help
2. Start computer with CD-ROM support
3. Start computer without CD-ROM support
4. Minimal Boot

If it didn't then what you have is not a proper startup disk, merely a
bootable floppy.

If that's the case, then download a diskmaker from www.bootdisk.com - get
the WinME OEM one - and run it to create the disk.
Then use that to boot the machine.

I have tried to use system restore on my computer. I
booted it up with a startup disk I got down from
www.bootdisk.com and as it came up with the prompt a:, I
used Zee's suggestions to restore the computer. It
restored to a previous date but on restart I had the same
problem as previously. The message I got was
WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS and WINDOWS\DISPLAY.SYS are either
missing or corrupted followed by the message that whilst
installing device IFSMGR 'Microsoft installable File
System Manager cannot find the helper driver. Please
ensure that IFSHLP.SYS has been installed. System halted.

I have read the instructions from the page that you
suggested but my startup disk does not come up with a
Startup menu just the prompt a:, do I then just enter the
edit command (line no 3) as per the instructions?

Would doing a system restore reload the problem files or
do i still need to do a restore of Windows ME from my
DEll reinstallation CD? If so how do I do it?

I am working on my old computer which has Windows ME

as
its OS. I think I deleted a system file because now

it
will not boot up at all (not even in Safe Mode). I
have
the original Window's ME CD. My question is: How do I
reinstall Windows ME from the CD or do I have to copy
it
to a floppy disc and then use that? and if so how do I
use a floppy to reinstall the OS? Or does anyone have
any
other suggestions? Thanks for any suggestions. C

Hi,

I had the same problem as you where my OS crashed and I
could not get on. We had a computer person look at it
and he had to install Windows 2000. But here is my
problem, I lost everything even Microsoft Word.

Question....Did you get Windows ME to work yet??? Or

did
you load and more recent version??

I'm trying to contact Microsoft but I'm not having any
luck.

Please reply to this email if you have any updates

Thanks
.

I am going to try getting a boot disk off the internet
and then using system restore as per the website that
Noel Paton recommended, it is a microsoft website. If
that does not work then I will have to try reinstalling
windows ME from my CD. I will let you know how it went
maybe in a few days time.

Thanks for the info re the boot disk. However do I need
to reinstall the OS to get rid of the error messages or
will a system restore do the job?

If I do need to do a reinstallation of the OS , do I just
run 'setup' from the CD?

Thanks.
