COMCTL32.DLL file is corrupt

I am running Windows ME on my home computer. This past
weekend I clicked the SHUTDOWN to end my session. My
computer locked up and the only way to shut it off was to
hold the power button down for a few seconds, it shut off.
I know enough that this is not the perferred method and
tried to re-start the computer to make sure everything was
OK.

As it starts I get the Sony (DOS) screen and the first
windows screen.However, when the screen goes blue and I
usually get the background picture, an error message
appears stating the COMCTL32.DLL file is corrupt. It
instructs me to reinstall this file.

The problem is my windows software is part not seperate to
the Sony Budled software. If I reinstall everything, I
loose everything. A Lot of Video Editting.

Can I download this file from another source and replace
the old one? Thanks for your help!

Can you boot to Safe Mode?
If so, then you can use MSCONFIG to extract a new copy of the COMCTL32.DLL
file - from the WIN_10.CAB file in the C:\Windows\Options\CABS (or
.....\INSTALL) folder - it belongs in the C:\Windows\System folder
