My internet connection stops when I defrag a disk!
I have this same problem in Win95, 98, 98SE
I connect using dialup, but if I try to do a defrag or move a large amount of files from one folder to another the dialup connection stops. When the defrag finishes, the connection resumes as normal. It's obvious that the problem occurs whenever there is a lot of continuous disk activity but does anyone know what causes this and is there a workaround? TIA |

TIA The workaround is, when defrag is running, don't do anything else. You can play solitare with very little interference with the defrag operation. Galen |

My internet connection stops when I defrag a disk!
lots of internal modems are 'dumb' they use the system processor to perform
a lot of their functions disk io is also processor intensive and has a higher priority so the modem may time out waiting for its slice of processor to help unload as much as possible, any unneeded processes before the defrag and leave more slices of the processor to use -- - Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Etrust/Vet/CA.online Antivirus scan http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.activescan.com Panda online AntiSpyware Scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/spyware/test/ Catalog of removal tools (1) http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Catalog of removal tools (2) http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/n...aspx?CID=40387 Trouble Shooting guide to Windows http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters _ wrote in message oups.com... TIA You should not be doing other tasks while defragging. Period. Plan your defrags for times when you are away from the computer, such as when are eating a meal, at school or work, or overnight. My internet connection stops when I defrag a disk!
This is like saying " My car won't move when I chain it to a tree"
Defrag is reading all files and folder useing recent history ,as a guide, to place data in the right place. Taking data fragments and placing them where they go. And rewriting the disk as it goes. Taking data. Writing it to the back of the drive. Placing fragments in their right spot and then taking the data it wrote to the back and placing it back at the front in IT'S right place. Setting everything in order as recently used. I am surprised you even get a completed defrag if you are surfing the net at the same time. Surfing the net is constantly changing the TIFs. Which should cause defrag to prompt a message that it can't continue until what every is accessing the drive is shut down. Even a solitare game should cause defrag to stop. While in defrag your whole harddrive,or partition that is being defraged,is being used to read, write and rewrite the data there. Running "System Monitor" during defrag should show a 100% usage.
