Just what does the cable select setting do?
Jonny told me in his last post to me You can't set jumpers to both
master and cable select. One or the other, not both. My computer manual says use cable select but do you think they mean only to added ide things on that bus. i did add the cable select jumper to the master with the master jumper on and also to the slave as the only set jumper. All seems so fsr ok. Should i remove the cable selesct from the master HD because it may give me problem down the road. ? |

Just what does the cable select setting do?
Leave everything to Cable Select, the jumpers on both drives should be
on Cable Select. In a Cable Select configuration the Master/Slave relationship is determined by the position (location) of the drives on the cable, that's all. Note John John's comments re the Master/Slave relationship on the IDE cable.
Don't go putting your boot disk on the slave connector as you will not boot. Some cables have the connectors marked as Master or Slave. If in doubt ask. Alan "John John" wrote in message ... Also make sure you use cables that support the cable select functions. All
cables in the last few years and all 80 pin cables do. Some of the older cables may not -- Jon Hildrum www.hildrum.com "Alan" wrote in message ... Just what does the cable select setting do?
The standard is either both master and slave devices will have their jumpers
set mutually to cable select (slave in the middle of the ribbon cable), OR, master jumpered master and slave jumpered slave set mutually for each (slave on the middle connnector of the ribbon cable). Not both. Why would you remove the cable select setting of the master if the other device (slave) on the same cable is set that way as well? At least that's what I interpret... I know for sure you have the master set as master AND cable select.... The slave's jumper setting(s) is not so obvious by your wordings to me. There may be an internal override when 2 jumpers governing configuration, where 1 takes precedence and ignores the other. I don't know. Don't care. Don't want to know. Serves no purpose, except allow a storage location for a jumper. -- Jonny "DJW" wrote in message ups.com... Jonny told me in his last post to me You can't set jumpers to both master and cable select.
