Default DOS Programs freeze computer

Is there any way of running old DOS programs like Wolfenstein on ME.
When I try, the computer freezes

You could try booting with the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk which will put
you into real-mode DOS and not through a WinMe DOS window.

See how it runs, and if OK (i.e. without freezing) then you may have to
consult your sound card handbook as to how to set the drivers up in r-m DOS
if you need sound.
