- Need help with Windows wallpaper

Hello Everybody,

I just reinstalled Windows ME and my old wallpaper. When the Windows
log in screen comes up, it still shows the Windows default wallpaper.
My wallpaper doesn't come up until windows is up and running.

Is there a way that my wallpaper can come up instead of the windows
default wallpaper, right from the start?

My wallpaper is a bitmap file. Does that make a difference?

Would converting it to a JPG or Gif be better?

I think I know about the behaviour you're talking about. This is what was
happening on my pc: the pc's basic wallpaper was "X", then I would switch
to wallpaper "Y", at shutdown I would see a little bit of wallpaper "X", at
next bootup I would see a little bit of "X" before the system finally
rendered "Y", then if I picked wallpaper "Z", I would see a little bit of
wallpaper "Y" as the last thing before the monitor turned off, at next boot,
I would first see wallpaper "Y", and then after a few minutes I would see
wallpaper "Z". It's as if WinME would always remember the last two
wallpapers that were picked.

The way I got around this weird illusion/behaviour of seeing the previously
picked wallpaper was to select "no wallpaper" or blank screen, then shut
down, then reboot and pick the wallpaper you REALLY want. Then at next shut
down when your selected wallpaper clears, WinME will show a few seconds of
the "blank" one. At next bootup, you will see a few seconds of the "blank"
one until your official wallpaper loads.

If you have to log into your PC, then try this....
When you get to the login screen, hit the ESC key - then adjust the
wallpaper to the way you want it.
reboot, and then log in normally.

See if that does it for you!

Noel,

I tried your suggestion which partially fixed the problem. Now when
my computer boots to the log in screen, my wall paper comes up.
However, after I type in my password, the windows default wall paper
comes back while windows is loading. After windows loads, my
walllpaper comes back again. How can I keep my wallpaper on the screen
throughout the boot up process?

This is a possibility ...... there is a file called logo.sys in the root
C:\ directory. This is actually a .bmp file and windows shows this
picture while booting. There are 2 other files in c:\windows, one called
logos.sys which windows shows while shutting down and another called
logow.sys which I think is briefly shown after shutdown is finished and
just before the PC powers off.

You can check these files by making a copy, changing the extension to
..bmp and viewing them in your favourite image viewer. (I like Irfanview).

Possibily this is what you are seeing when you start up ?

On my system they are a 320x400 in size. I have converted my own images
to this size, in either bmp or png format, and renamed them to c:
\logo.sys, c:\windows\logos.sys and c:\windows\logow.sys and now have my
own personal startup and shutdown screens.

exist, then it is used, which is where the OEM's insert their favoured
flash-screens) - the WinME logo is generated from within the IO.SYS file on
boot.
