Default ASSERT Failed

Dear all experts,

I had hit a problem while opening multimedia files with either Windows Media Player or ActiveMovie programs. Both prompt an error "ASSERT Failed" but without any messages. I had hit "Yes" or "No" and both prompt a dialog box to ask me to open files. I don't know which file I had to open and next time, I had hit cancel, it prompted a fault window show "XXXXX encountered an exception 03H in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff76921" which XXXXX is "wmplayer" or "rundll32". I can't open any multimedia files include watching VCDs.
Can anyone please help me to solve this problem?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Regards,
Kenny.
