Mail from microsoft ?
MS don't send emails to people unless you've contacted them and asked them
to send you something. The attachment is almost certainly something nasty, so delete it, do NOT open or run it. If you had adequate and up to date a/v software in place, the attachemnt would not be avialable to open anyway. regards, Richard "JohnH" wrote in message ... Mail from microsoft ?
If you have signed up for Microsoft updates the you might get e-mails
directing you to the site where the update can be downloaded. You will not get e-mails containing the update as an attachment. You should delete any e-mails claiming to be from Microsoft that contain an EXE attachment There is no such thing as a 'real' e-mail from Microsoft that contains an EXE attachment. You can activate e-mail scanning in your anti-virus, but this can cause performance and other problems, and it may not help with ZIP or similar encoding.. If you implement a rule that you always save an e-mail attachment before opening it then the normal disk scanning is adequate. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (DTS) "JohnH" wrote in message ... Mail from microsoft ?
Simple solution.
Go to Windows Update web site once every two weeks. Forget about the Mail notification. For Win98SE there are very few critical updates coming down the pike. Places like here or MSN Home page usually will have a notice of any new updates. Once you get a real MS-update mail notice,if any, select to unsubscribe. Then after that... just delete any notifications that arrive in your mail. -----Original Message----- Hi can someone please help me with this lately ive been receiving mail which is supposed to be updated from microsoft i dont beleive they are today i received the following email (this is the source code from the email) X-Message-Info: JGTYoYF78jEHjJx36Oi8+YDSEg8qKPPD Received: from av4.isp.contactel.cz ([212.65.193.174]) by mc9-f16.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.6824); Fri, 11 Jun 2004 08:00:53 -0700 Received: by av4.isp.contactel.cz (Postfix, from userid 150) id 6630D200AE28; Fri, 11 Jun 2004 17:00:43 +0200 (CEST) Received: from dlwj (p0113.as-l042.contactel.cz [194.108.237.113]) by av4.isp.contactel.cz (Postfix) with SMTP id 8AEF7200A09F; Fri, 11 Jun 2004 16:59:42 +0200 (CEST) From: "Microsoft Net Mail System" To: "mail client" SUBJECT: Returned Message: Returned To Mailer Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="brektz" Message-Id: Date: Fri, 11 Jun 2004 16:59:42 +0200 (CEST) X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63-ctt_version1 (2004-01-11) on av4 X-Spam-Level: ******* X-Spam-Status: No, hits=8.0 required=15.0 tests=HTML_40_50,HTML_MESSAGE, HTML_RELAYING_FRAME,MICROSOFT_EXECUTABLE,MIME_HTML _ NO_CHARSET, MIME_HTML_ONLY,MIME_HTML_ONLY_MULTI,MIME_SUSPECT_N A ME, MSGID_FROM_MTA_SHORT,TO_MALFORMED,TO_NO_USER autolearn=no version=2.63-ctt_version1 Return-Path: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 11 Jun 2004 15:00:54.0151 (UTC) FILETIME=[E4A66170:01C44FC4] --brektz Content-Type: text/html Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable HTML HEAD/HEAD BODY iframe src=3D"cid:yphajgyjj" height=3D0 width=3D0/iframe BRMessage from freemail.net BRBRBRBRUndeliverable to /B BRBRBRMessage follows:BRBRBRBR /BODY/HTML --brektz Content-Type: audio/x-wav; name="gncvhds.exe" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Id: yphajgyjj i have sent no emails to that address this email also included an attachment which ive not opened "gncvhds.exe" how can one be sure an update is really coming from microsoft . |

Mail from microsoft ?
There are several Internet worms that masquerade as patches from Microsoft. The most common
are; Swen, Dumaru, Gibe and Torvil. All AV companies and Microsoft are fully aware of this problem. All you can do is... 1. Keep your AV package up-to-date 2. Create email "rules" to auto-delete the offending messages 3. Petition your ISP to install AV software on their respective email servers. 4. Install *all* MS Critical Updates via the Windows Update web site. 5. Always munge your email address when posting to UseNet 6. If all else fails, Change your email address.
