Default Mail from microsoft ?

MS don't send emails to people unless you've contacted them and asked them
to send you something.
The attachment is almost certainly something nasty, so delete it, do NOT
open or run it.
If you had adequate and up to date a/v software in place, the attachemnt
would not be avialable to open anyway.

regards, Richard

Default Mail from microsoft ?

If you have signed up for Microsoft updates the you might get e-mails
directing you to the site where the update can be downloaded. You will not
get e-mails containing the update as an attachment. You should delete any
e-mails claiming to be from Microsoft that contain an EXE attachment

There is no such thing as a 'real' e-mail from Microsoft that contains an
EXE attachment.

You can activate e-mail scanning in your anti-virus, but this can cause
performance and other problems, and it may not help with ZIP or similar
encoding.. If you implement a rule that you always save an e-mail
attachment before opening it then the normal disk scanning is adequate.

Default Mail from microsoft ?

most viruses also replicate themselves by using the mailbox on the infected pc
as a name source for 'from' be careful of what you assume is from friends, an
email listed as from 'fred' could be from a virus on somebody's infected pc
that fred sent an email to 3 years ago who has a virus now not fred at all

Microsoft emails only have links to knowlegebase pages of their web site for
you to read the bulletin and decide whether you want to click the download
link,
MS DO NOT send attachments without you entering a specific contract with them
for a particular fix for a particular item, and then you would definitely know
it was coming since you have already paid for it

Default Mail from microsoft ?

Simple solution.
Go to Windows Update web site once every two weeks.
Forget about the Mail notification. For Win98SE there are
very few critical updates coming down the pike. Places
like here or MSN Home page usually will have a notice of
any new updates.
Once you get a real MS-update mail notice,if any, select
to unsubscribe. Then after that... just delete any
notifications that arrive in your mail.

Default Mail from microsoft ?

There are several Internet worms that masquerade as patches from Microsoft. The most common
are; Swen, Dumaru, Gibe and Torvil. All AV companies and Microsoft are fully aware of this
problem.

All you can do is...

1. Keep your AV package up-to-date
2. Create email "rules" to auto-delete the offending messages
3. Petition your ISP to install AV software on their respective email servers.
4. Install *all* MS Critical Updates via the Windows Update web site.
5. Always munge your email address when posting to UseNet
6. If all else fails, Change your email address.
