Chm context pane shows tiny boxes not letters
I posted this in "display" but thought I might get some other replies in
"applications". This has been driving me crazy!!! I just bought a used computer from a guy who rebuilds computers in my neighborhood. A week after I brought it home (It has Windows Me installed on it) I started noticing little square boxes in stead of letters in my Windows Media Player 7 menu (left sidebar links where it has "Find Media on the Internet" "Copy Audio CD Music to Computer" etc.) I reinstalled the player but no change. Then I happened to randomly open up the help file for Internet Explorer and I noticed the contents/index pane did not have letters but little boxes. After checking out various help files I noticed that every other .CHM help file I have have on my computer has been affected and now has the little square boxes instead of letters in the contents index. Some fixes I tried: 1- Someone suggested that I delete the c:\windows\ttfcache which I did and Windows rebuilt it but this did not fix the problem. 2- Then they referred me to the Microsoft article http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;254773 which talks about a corrupt marlett.ttf file. I extracted the file from Windows\Options|Install but could not install it because the original Marlett file is Windows Protected. I followed the instructions for deleting a Windows Protected file but I could not delete the marlett font even in safe mode. And for some reason, windows could not find the file to extract it using the startup disk (dos mode) instructions I got from this article. 3- Someone said it may be the sserife.fon file since that is the font they use in the Context/Index pane of the chm help files so I extracted that file and replaced it but no change. 4- I even downloaded some program called HTMLhelp.exe from Microsoft because you can open up these chm help files in this program and make changes but I could not fix the problem with this program. 5. I downloaded and installed IE 5.5 service pack for the files hoping this was the solutions but it did not help. I found a message board with this problem on it and the person actually re-installed Windows and it did not help the situation. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help, Angie P.S. I scanned for a virus with Grisoft Free AVG 7 software but there was no virus. I ran an Adaware and Spybot check and nothing came up. I was wondering, is it possible that the antivirus software could be doing this to the script??? Angie |

In IE, open View, hover your pointer over Encoding and post back with what
is marked. Heirloom, old and suspicious "Angie" wrote in message ... I posted this in "display" but thought I might get some other replies in "applications". This has been driving me crazy!!! "Unicode" is selected and "Left to Right Document" is selected. Just for the
heck of it, I tried to change "Unicode" to "Unicode UTF-8" (which is what IE 6 on my other computer has selected) but I could not change the selection. Anyhow... "heirloom" wrote: In IE, open View, hover your pointer over Encoding and post back with what is marked. Heirloom, old and suspicious |

OOps. That's a Gilda Radner "Never mind". When I opened up IE before, it
was a blank page. So I then opened up a web page in the browser and it had "Western European ISO" selected. I changed it to "Western European Windows" and then opened IE chm help file but no change in the Navagation pane font. "Angie" wrote: "Unicode" is selected and "Left to Right Document" is selected. Funny reference to Gilda.....I miss her. Your issue is not what I expected.
The 'encoding' is obviously not behind your problem........it will change depending on the site your are visiting when working properly. Sorry I could not be of more help. Yeah, me too
This seemed like such a simple problem. But even the CHM help sites I posted this message on are stumpted. I was thinking of bringing it back to the computer guy I bought it from but, when I saw him last week, as I was describing the problem to him, his eyes kind of glazed over so I figured I'd looked elsewhere for an answer. Well anyhow, I want to thank you for the time you took. Appreciatively, Angie "heirloom" wrote: Funny reference to Gilda.....I miss her. Your issue is not what I expected.
