File association problem

My computer's text files have been captured by a Microsoft Word Viewer
that I downloaded (to view Word documents, obviously), so that ALL text
documents I save are saved as Word-type documents. Now someone has
reported that an article, i.e., a text file, I sent him from my computer
didn't open normally for him but was 'garbled, with formatting things
spelled out, rather than simply there as format'. I suspect that
Microsoft Word Viewer was responsible. (Btw, I can't even edit any of
my saved text documents now unless I copy and paste them into another
blank text file: e.g., WordPad. However, when I go to save that file,
it inevitably gets saved as a Word-type file.) How can I keep Microsoft
Word Viewer but only have it open Word documents exclusively, and how
can I stop it saving all of my text files as Word-type documents?

Hi Ken,

All you have to do is change the association to use Wordpad or Notepad
for text documents in Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types.
Find the association and edit it to use something else.

If you sent a text document to someone and it is not really a text
document, then ensure it is before it is sent. Send me the same
document and I will see what it is.
It cannot be the fault of Word Viewer as that cannot alter files.
If you are using Wordpad to create or alter a file, then ensure you
save it as "Text Document". The default is "Word for Windows 6.0" if
you are still using Win98.
You may consider using Notepad to open Text Documents as that is
normal.

There is no problem in having the Word Viewer to open .doc (Word)
files and have Notepad open .txt (Text Document ). That is what I have
on one computer.

Open either MyComputer or Explore.
On the Menu bar click View Folder Options File Types.
Locate the ext you want to associate with a different app and edit it.
Or
Click once on the file you want to associate with another app.
Right click once on the file and on the popup menu click Open With.
Scroll or Browse to the app you want to associate it with and double click
it.

Getting/Using Open With from the popup menu

Left click once on a file you want to associate with a program to hilite it.
Next hold down the Shift key and right click on it to get the popup menu.
Select "Open With" from the list.
Select the program you want to open it with by left clicking it once.
Put a check in "Always open......."
Click Apply/Ok.

**Note: You may find it better to leave "Always open......." unchecked
until you are sure that you have the correct program you want to use. Once
you are sure of the program to use, then check it.
