Click Start Run, type scanregw and click OK.
Click Yes when it asks if you want to back up your Registry. Click Start Run, type regedit and click OK. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, navigate to and highlight this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders In the right-hand pane, find the value named "Cookies". Double-click "Cookies", and type in the exact path to the folder you wish to use, and click OK. Close the Registry Editor. Make sure you copy or create your cookies folder to that new location, in Windows Explorer. Alternately, you can navigate to that key and export it to a Registry file (.reg), using Regedit's Registry menu Export. Then open the file with Notepad, change the path in the file, and save the changes when you close Notepad. Then right-click the modified .reg file and click Merge on the menu that appears, and OK to the confirmation. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "vegeddabowdit" wrote in message ... Yeh. I already tried that method.
Discovered my dilemma is trying to movr the folder to another drive, not to mention having a scramdisk formatted partition, which kinda scrambles up the drive designations. I just found it can be relocated elsewhere on C:\ via a simple matter of drag & drop, but I get "Cannot move index. Access is denied" when attempting to move it outside of C:\. I can copy/paste the folder & alter the registry, but as soon as I launch the browser or reboot, it reverts back to default. Maybe If I did so then delete it in DOS? Anyone ever tried that? I can't say whether it's because of the way scramdisk reconfigures things, or the system just won't allow the cookie folder to reside elsewhere in general, but I suspect the latter. I don't see how scramdisk would be involved, as long as the drive you are trying to
move the Cookies to always has the same drive letter, and it is not one of the encrypted virtual scramdisk drives. Rather than trying to "copy" or "move" the Cookies folder after making the change in the registry, try this: Create a new empty folder on the drive where you want the cookies folder...name that new empty folder Cookies. Open IE, click the File menu Import and Export. In the Wizard, choose to Export Cookies, then export them to a file (browse to a location like My Documents and save the file there). Close IE and all apps, make the change in the Shell Folders key of the registry, then restart in MS-DOS Mode (Start Shutdown Restart in MS-DOS Mode). In DOS Mode, you should be at the C:\Windows prompt. Assuming that your Cookies folder in a sub-folder of the Windows folder, type the following and press Enter after each line: smartdrv deltree /y cookies When this operation is complete you will return to a C:\Windows prompt. Type EXIT and press Enter, to restart Windows. (If you Cookies folder was in another location, you will have to navigate there using short DOS names, so check the location beforehand, in Windows, and post back if it is another location.) In Windows Explorer, look and see if you now have NO Cookies folder in the old location, and you DO have the new empty folder you created in the new location. if this is the case, open IE, click the File Menu Import and Export, then Import Cookies From a File Browse to the file you saved earlier, and Import. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "vegeddabowdit" wrote in message ... Hi Glen
Rather than trying to "copy" or "move" the Cookies folder after making the change in the registry, try this: Did just as you suggested. "deltree /y cookies" removes the folder, but the results are still the same. The folder is recreated on restart. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------ Also tried moving it, move C:\windows\cookies d:\backup but got "cannot be moved - permission denied -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- This works move C:\windows\cookies\index.dat d:\backup\cookies but makes no difference as default is again reinstated upon restart ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- At first I thought maybe some setting or third party utility might be responsible, but since I can move the folder within C:\, & in DOS I can move index.dat to D:\ (thereby officially eliminating scramdisk as a complication), it doesn't seem likely. Please don't be insulted, but have you actually swapped a cookies folder to another drive, or is this theoretical? thx ~J |

No, I have not moved a Cookie folder...this is based on what *should* happen. I
will try it myself here when I have time, and let you know if it works for me. Are you FIRST making the Registry change in Shell Folder key and creating the new empty Cookie folder, PRIOR to doing the Deltree and restart? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "vegeddabowdit" wrote in message ... Additionally, the default location may still be recreated, but the new folder may
actually be used. Have you tried importing the exported cookies, to see which folder they get put into? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "glee" wrote in message ... I think you found the *other* Registry key that would be involved, PCR:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet Settings\Cache\Special Paths\Cookies That, along with the Shell Folders entry, are probably both required to be changed. However, with these "special" folders, usually all that is needed is to drag and drop the folder in the location you want it, and Windows changes the Registry itself. I know it does this with the My Documents folder. I dunno why the OP cannot drag and drop the folder in the first place. Time for me to try some things here, when I get some time in a little while. Just got home from work, and I am on my way out again. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "PCR" wrote in message ... I never did it, either.
