Norton's Internet Security 2005 and WINME
Has anyone been able to successfully install Norton's onto WinME ? Been at this for over a week now and nothing seems to work. I keep getting errors during the configuration step. Symantec is now advising that I should re-install the Microsoft Windows Installer. Has this worked for others? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, George |

George,
No, but then again many who want to look after their PC wouldn't want to install such seriously defective software on their PC. No software released by Symantec for the domestic market is particularly good and all recent versions have serious problems with none working properly when installed on Win Me. If you go ahead and do manage to get NIS2005 installed on Win Me make certain that system restore is fully functional as the likelihood that you will need to use it is at some time. However, using system restore is likely to break the NAV component of NIS due to the defective programming of those at Symantec and likewise there is a pretty good chance that Symantec's LiveUpdate will corrupt the Win Me state manager control files which can then lead to destroying the system restore archive. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP George wrote: Has anyone been able to successfully install Norton's onto WinME ? Mike,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I was not aware that NIS2005 was so problematic. Previously I had NIS2001 on this system and everything seemd to operate well. Given the problems you outlined for NIS2005, is there another package you would recommend? Is McCaffe more stable on WinME? Personally I wouldn't recommend you install any domestic products from
either Symantec or McAfee. AV Programs that work well with Win Me include: eTrust from Computer Associates (formerly called InoculateIT), NOD32, AVG7 and AVAST whilst some for whom cost is secondary to effectiveness prefer Kaspersky. I have also recently been hearing favourable remarks being made about Panda. TrendMicro has its fans also but others won't touch it. Firewalls that seem to work with Win Me include: Zone Alarm (free) and Zone Alarm Pro (paid for) from Zone Labs and Kerio firewall. AV/Firewall package. EZArmor from Computer Associates (this comprises eTrust Av and a rebadged Zone Alarm Pro from Zone Labs). -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP wrote: Thanks for the prompt reply. Anyone considering using Panda - Beware of "issues" (pandas words) with
Titanium 2005! I installed it on my girlfriends pc - running ME & it crashed the whole system. It only does this on some pc's & they don't seem to know why.
