Quick Time Explorer
I orginally posted this question in Learning General Discussions. I realize
it now that it was in the wrong area. My apologies. How do I get rid of the Quick time exploer icon on the right hand side at the bottom of the windows desktop. It was downloaded by my grandchildren to play games. I can't get rid of it. |

Right-click on the icon and select Quick Time Preferences, then select the
Advanced tab. Un-check the "Install Quick Time icon in system tray" box at the bottom of the page. N.B. this only 'hides' the icon. On the other hand, if you don't want Quick Time on your PC at all, you could always uninstall it completely using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Mart "Irene" wrote in message ... Mart.....removing QuickTime is darn near impossible. With Noel's help,
I got rid of most of it, but it still shows up in Startup (unchecked) and also in a Registry Scan. I delete the "qt" files and they come back. I just used RegEdit and can see nothing with "qt or quicktime" under software, so not sure where it is hiding. Cheers...Figgs "Mart" wrote in message ... Heather,
The unchecked entry is unimportant since the file it refers to is no longer present. This is where the cleanup button on Win Me's Msconfig | Startup can be useful although it also can remove wanted entries such as point32.exe from Microsoft's Intellipoint. Normally I use regedit to remove such dead entries. Using regedit, unchecked (rather than checked) items may be found as follows depending upon the entry in "Loaded from" in MSConfig | Startup. Browse in the LH pane clicking the + signs until you get to the required key and in the RH pane you will see any values stored in that key together with their associated data. Unwanted values can be deleted. HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE [Registry (Per-User Run)] HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run- [Registry (Machine Run)] HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run- [Registry (Machine Service)] HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Services- In addition unchecked items may also appear in either [Common Startup Group] C:\Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items or [Startup Group] C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items and finally an unchecked [run=] entry in Win.ini will appear as a norun=???? entry in the [windows] section of the file win.ini. Sometimes you might also come across a noload entry. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows Heather wrote: Mart.....removing QuickTime is darn near impossible. There is another program that can play QuickTime media :
http://www.codecpackguide.com/quicktimealt.htm And another for RealPlayer : http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...lternative.htm Both work well with Win ME. I feel the best solution is to use neither and forget about quicktime and
real media files - just as I do wma and wmv. g Incidentally you omitted to mention QuickTime_Alternative (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...lternative.htm) in your list of alternatives. -- Mike Maltby MowGreen [MVP] wrote: There is another program that can play QuickTime media : http://www.codecpackguide.com/quicktimealt.htm And another for RealPlayer : http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...lternative.htm Both work well with Win ME. |

LOL!! I dumped QuickTime and also Real Player a long time ago. I stick
with WMP for jokes and videos and Music Match to play music to surf by....grin. I am glad that I got all of the mp3's that I did coz it sure is getting tougher out there to download what I want.....which is relatively few, to be honest. Hey Mikey......(G)....if you find Julio Iglesias' new CD called Romantic Classics, let me know where. Mind you, it is just being released today. I can hear the *harrumphing* now.......over calling you *Mikey* and my choice of music, ha ha. Just checking your weather.....it is bloody balmy over there!! Mid to high 70's.....nice. Weather here's been pretty pleasant in between the heavy rain storms.

Hey! Heather - I didn't say removing QuickTime was going to be easy! vbg
but the OP's major concern was about getting rid of the icon. I think yours, Mike's and Mow's follow-ups pretty well cover all eventualities. I just hope Irene managed to find her way back here to pick-up our (collective) tips. Mart "Heather" wrote in message ... Mart.....removing QuickTime is darn near impossible.
