ME upgrade over 98
I have a very simple and very stupid question. Can I upgrade Windows 98 to
Windows ME without losing any data? Or at least supposedly without losing data? I want to do it because then when our network LAN connection resets itself, 98 won't have to keep being manually released and renewed before allowing access to the internet again. |

Installing Win Me as an upgrade should retain all of your existing
programs and data although I would suggest that you check for program compatibility before doing so. Nevertheless it is always advisable to backup essential data and passwords, etc. before any update "just in case". More important though is that some of your hardware would probably benefit from installing Win Me compatible drivers, some of which are essential for your hardware to work correctly with Win Me. Note that Win Me does not support Real Mode so some older hardware including some scanners that connect via the parallel port will not always work with Win Me. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Newgrange Huntress wrote: I have a very simple and very stupid question. I have a very simple and very stupid question. Can I upgrade Windows 98 to Windows ME without losing any data? Or supposedly without losing data? "Yes". I'd avoid OS upgrades, though... http://cquirke.mvps.org/reinst.htm I want to do it because then when our network LAN connection resets itself, Why does it reset itself? Troubleshoot that, rather. 98 won't have to keep being manually released and renewed before allowing access to the internet again. I don't know of any beneficial changes in WinME vs. Win98xx networking that would help here, but then again, I'm not a LAN guru. I know of one detrimental change, though! Whereas Win95xx and Win98xx support up to 10 incoming LAN connects. WinME supports only 5. So if you have a 11+seat LAN and PCs lose the ability to connect into this PC because the limit is exceeded, going WinME will make this CONSIDERABLY worse. Of you are 5-10 seat, you can expect WinME to add new headaches even if it fixes old ones. --------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - Never turn your back on an installer program --------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - |
