Default PCI Ethernet Controller - add new hardware wizard

Strangest thing happened. When I booted up got the Add new hardware wizard.
Said PCI Ethernet Controller.
I clicked next for let windows do the automatic search for it, and it came
back and said it could not find it.
Then I tried to do the advanced... only the A: drive showed up as a drive
to select to browse.
I then went to system device mgr, saw Other Devices with yellow question
mark, clicked on it and saw the PCI Ethernet controller with yellow question
mark too. I then clicked on refresh, and it disappeared. Also, I couldnt
connect to the internet.
I then did a winipcfg release all/renew all, and rebooted.
This time the wizard did not show, and the Other devices does not show
anymore. Internet access is now working too.
What just happened here? anything I should do?

Don't sweat it - Windows found and installed the driver.

It's likely that you have multiple installs of some drivers - try this and
see what you can see...
Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Look for duplicate entries for affected hardware
Remove ALL instances of such duplicates (leave entries in the System branch
alone for the moment)
reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers.
See if that corrects your errors.

I'm not sure how to identify the duplicates.
Network adapters has a lot of entires.
Didnt see the PCI Ethernet Controller under any of the categories..
How would I identify a dup

well, boy do I feel foolish.... oh well. Thats why you're the expert and
I'm asking for help!
There were three entries for one of the network adapters.
I removed two of them (all three were identical).
And that pesky OTHER was there with a yellow ?
and the PCI ethernet Controller was there again with a yellow ?. I removed
that one again too then rebooted.

Donna - I said to delete ALL instances!!
There's a reason for that, so now finish the job, by rebooting to Safe Mode
again, and removing the NIC completely.
This give Windows the chance to find the NIC again, and reinstall the
drivers properly - chances are that you currently have two entries for it if
you look again in Safe Mode (and even if only one, how do you know it's not
the *wrong* one??)

Well, had a bit of a panic there.
Deleted the entry, and then Windows couldnt find it to install it, and my
internet connection was dead in the water. It asked me to insert the
Windows ME disk and I tried several that came with the computer. (came
preinstalled by Dell, so It wasnt I dont have the actual WIndows ME disk.
Have one for reinstallation, have a couple for the drivers.
anyway, I still am not really sure how, because I did not see a message that
it was successfully installed, but I rebooted several times (when all else
fails reboot!)
and now the driver seems to be installed ok. says the device is working
properly, and I did a search on the file it could not find, and sure enough,
there is is c\windows\system32\drivers\mxnic.sys
so... all done or ?
