Default 10 minutes to start

I have w98 and w2k on a laptop. Suddenly I can only boot
to safe mode. Normal startup takes about 10 minutes and
then the system is almost unusable with the system process
(NOT system idle process) at 100%. This problem applies to
both operating systems. I have tried disabling nearly all
devices. I have re-installed w98. Still no joy.

Any ideas please?

You start by saying you can only boot to safe mode and in the next sentence,
you say a normal boot takes 10 minutes. Which is it? Assuming you can boot
both ways, does the safe mode boot take a long time also? If not, something
loading in normal mode (but not safe mode) is probably the culprit. Use
this technique for troubleshooting:

I did say that in normal mode it takes 10 minutes and is
practically unusable. Safe mode boots quite quickly. So I
had concluded that it was something in normal mode causing
the problem. CPU usage etc. is OK in safe mode.

Thanks

Do a logged startup in normal mode.

Then use BootLog Analyzer (free) from
http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/ to analyze the log file and see
what caused the delays.

Good luck
