Default Register Cleaners (no way)

Today I opened my inbox, low and behold McAfee sent me an email wanting
to sell me their Register Cleaner!! I remember the one they sent me to clean
out their product and it cleaned out other things that were needed to run
some programs. I then tried to re-install their VirusScan and could not. I
was lucky that I had backed up my computer using Drive Image that came with
my computer. I would never use a register cleaner because it does not
determine the good from the bad register files. It is better to use Gary's
Clean Boot instructions. I am planning on using it again soon.

Keep it up, Angel, and you'll be answering questions instead of asking them,

Good work, Angel!

I know very little about registry cleaners. I do occasionally use
RegCleaner (the older version recommended by Shep) after uninstalling
apps. I specifically search for instances of remnants of the recently
uninstalled apps. Of course I back up the registry before making any
changes. I have a feeling this is a different type of registry cleaner;
perhaps the others overreach and don't allow the user to manually
select? I've never had a problem with my method. What do others think
about this issue?

I use them (including the one you mention), primarily for the same purpose,
though I'm not fanatic about it. More in the event of anamolies noticed
after uninstalls of such things as McAfee, Norton, etc., or on a system that
someone else has royally trashed by installing/uninstalling stuff
improperly, and in the same way -- looking at each entry that's flagged and
evaluating it carefully. But the rule is, "If in doubt, leave it alone."

By the way, the same goes for anti-spyware stuff. Even AdAware, probably the
best that's out there, has on a few occasions returned false positives for
me, mostly when there was a new app or Windows Update involved that AdAware
had yet to account for, and most of that has been due to relatively recent
added security hand-holding functions (better described as hand-wringing!)
Fortunately, most if not all of these entreis are automatically restored and
simply show up on the next AdAware scan again. That's how I noticed them.

Hi,
When McAfee sent me their cleaner that was only to uninstall all if the
McAfee VirusScan automatically, it cleaned out a lot more and did not clean
out all McAfee VirusScan. I had to go to my backup. Then I had to do the
Clean Boot in order to get rid of it McAfee so I could install Avast! McAfee
was giving me all kinds of problems with Windows 98. I do not know much
about other register cleaners. I still do not trust them. A business man I
know who works with computers said he never would use them because they
cannot determine the difference between a good or bad registry entry. So he
cleans out his manually. There are so many shared files and he won't get
touch them. He calls his friend for help with some of his computer stuff, he
says he is not an expert on programing
