D:/autorun.exe
I seem to have a problem. File D:/autorun.exe seems to have disappeared on my
computer. I do not know how this happened, but I need to fix it. All I do know is that I had uninstalled my scanner today and then tried to reinstall it and a box from my Norton Antivirus popped up and said I had a virus in D:/autorun.exe and it wanted to know if I wanted to delete the file because it could not be repaired or quarintened. So, I probably screwed up and deleted it when I was not supposed to do that, but I really did not have much of a choice. I don't know how a virus got into the autorun because I run my virus software continually. So, how do I get this back. This is the error message I get when I try to access autorun: Cannot find the file 'D:/autorun.exe' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. Does anyone out there have any suggestions for me. I would apprecate any help. Thanks, Kemm |

You are not meant to have a file called D:\autorun.exe
(I assume that D:\ is a hard drive partition, not a CD drive) You are also not meant to have a file D:\autorun.inf, so delete that if present. How (and why) are you accessing autorun? Do you still have a problem after deleting D:\autorun.inf? ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.win98.performance, "Kemm556" wrote: I seem to have a problem. No, D:/ is my CD-ROM drive. You asked how and why I was accessing the
autorun? As I explained before,I put my scanner software cd in the cd-rom drive and a box came up from Norton Anti-virus stating there was a virus in my D:/autorun.exe file. I could not repair or quarentine it, so I deleted it. Then I could not install my scanner software. I don't know what to type in the box when you go to startrun. I tried the D:/autorun.exe, but I got the error message that I wrote in my previous post. What should I be typing in this box so I can install software? I checked to see if I had the file D:/autorun.inf and I got the same error message as when I type in D:/autorun.exe. My Cd-rom player and drive are working ok, It just seems that software will not startup automatically like it is supposed to. Also, why did you assume my hard drive partition is D:/ and not my CD-Rom drive? Please let me know if you have anymore suggestions for me. I assumed D: was not your CD drive as you cannot normally delete a
file on a CD. Forget deleting D:\autorun.inf on a CD. How you install software depends on the installation supplied on the CD. Not all CDs use an autorun.exe and for those that do, you would surely not use the syntax D:/autorun.exe when it would be D:\autorun.exe Some may use a setup.exe but if you look in D:\ you will normally see D:\autorun.inf (not D:/autorun.inf) and you can open that in Notepad to see what it is using. If you want a CD to run automatically: Right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties. Choose the Device Manager tab. Open the CD-ROM branch, and select the entry for your CD-ROM drive. Click Properties, and then choose the Settings tab. Turn on the Auto insert notification option. Click OK, and then OK again. You'll have to restart Windows for this change to take effect. It is possible you have Autoinsert on but AutoRun off for both data and audio. Use TweakUI and you can alter these individually. Sorry Alan. It was D:\autorun.exe that I deleted. I had the slash going the
wrong way. But either way that I key it when going to startrun, it comes up with the exact same error message. I had it written down correctly when I deleted it from the Norton Antivirus, but when I typed it in the run box the forward slash was already there next to the D, so I did not change it. Sorry for the confusion. I don't know if this makes a difference with any of your answers or not. But mainly, I should still be able to install software from CD's by just manually starting the installation, correct? That is my main concern. I already checked in Device manager about the Auto insert notification box and it is already checked. And so was Disconnect and DMA. So, that is about all I can tell you. Thanks for your help. I don't understand how you can delete autorun.exe from a CD so we may
have a language problem here. If there is not a D:\autorun.exe then you obviously cannot start a CD that way. Yes, you can start the installation manually but what you use depends on the installation. Look at the CD in Windows Explorer and see if there is a setup.exe or any instructions in a readme file or in the autorun.inf as already suggested. ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.win98.performance, "Kemm556" wrote: Sorry Alan. My Cd-rom player and drive are working ok, It just seems that software will not startup automatically like it is supposed to. Also, why did you assume my hard drive partition is D:/ and not my CD-Rom drive? Please let me know if you have anymore suggestions for me. Thanks, Kemm "Alan Edwards" wrote: You are not meant to have a file called D:\autorun.exe (I assume that D:\ is a hard drive partition, not a CD drive) You are also not meant to have a file D:\autorun.inf, so delete that if present. File D:/autorun.exe seems to have disappeared on my computer.
