....unless you've unpacked, or stored, or downloaded something into it that
hasn't been unpacked or unzipped to another location, ...then you can delete everything in it. Do I delete all files in TEMP folder?
Millie -
Yes, you can delete the TEMP files *After* a re-boot of your PC. You *must* re-boot first before doing the delete, as there may be some files which have some need to complete certain tasks - such as if you've just installed a program or something of that nature. Simply open that folder (C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) and using the edit menu on the toolbarselect alldelete by a R-Click and Shift key if you'd like to bypass the Recycle bin and permanently delete them. If you'd prefer to send the to the Recycle bin, select them as I've just described, but then use the delete function without using the shift key. If, for some reason the process stops (unlikely after a re-boot has been performed), then simply Ctrl-key and select the top most filer or folder in TEMP to de-select it. Then continue the process. To empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files, and the semi-obscured Content.IE5 folder use the following method. First close all windows and open browser applicationsControl PanelIE OptionsDelete filesdelete all off-line content (when that dialogue box appears)OKOK out. *Don't* use any other method, such as that which I stated to use for the TEMP folder to do this process. Only use the IE Options delete files method. If the process is very slow, be patient. If the process of deletion "hangs" or freezes the PC, re-set the PC by the power button if Ctrl-Alt-Del will not stop the process. If it hangs as I've said, then you may need to use a DOS command such as Deltree to accomplish the deleting of the contents. Post back if you need further help. Do I delete all files in TEMP folder?
Under normal circumstances, C:\WINDOWS\TEMP can be cleared of
files/folders after a fresh boot. You need the fresh boot, because something may be sitting there, waiting to "complete" an install. You will likely have seen a message about it, though. Anyway, you should know whether you've installed something since boot. Now, some files may return after the delete. "WebPoolFileFile" is one. That will come back next boot or when you run McAfee. I have seen one poster who objected, saying one should browse through those files, looking for .log's. He said it might be interesting to see whether there is an error message or something inside. It was too late for me by then. Naturally, if you have actually installed something into TEMP, there might be a Registry connection to it. Those, you need to un/re-install elsewhere. Finally, I even saw a poster who had system files in there, perhaps it was the Temporary Internet Files in there. That shouldn't be! Well, to be certain, is C:\Windows\TEMP mentioned in any of these Registry keys? Do I delete all files in TEMP folder?
In general, you can completely empty the TEMP folder immediately after =
rebooting (always reboot--there may be some files waiting to be = referenced during the next startup.) Caveats are that you may have mistakenly put files in TEMP that = shouldn't have been put there. Also, some programs store emergency = backups (timed backups, etc.) in TEMP, though that practice is outdated. = Also, if your system is having problems, there may be files stored there = that a tech support person would want to see. So, if your system seems healthy, if you aren't missing any personal = files, and you have just restarted your machine--sure, go ahead and = delete them all. If it makes you nervous, *move* them to a different = folder and wait for a week to see if anything untoward occurs. --=20 Gary S. Terhune MS MVP for Win9x =20 "Millie" wrote in message = ... Do I delete all files in TEMP folder?
!Thanks RJK, Lucky Strike, PCR and Gary! I guess I should have just done a search for temp files because a *few* others have asked the same question. Do your eyes ever just roll out of your heads when you hear them over and over? AND that we all continue to use computers and actually manage to be successful sometimes?
