Playing DVD in Windows Media Player 9.0 for Windows 98SE
Playing DVD's (MPEG2) in Windows Media Player 9.0 for Windows 98SE - what
software(codecs) is required? What is better to use, third party software DVD Players installed, or a MPEG2 Codec for WMP? There is some approved decoders for Windows XP PC's, and what about Windows 98SE? Is there approved codecs? Should PC have a DVD-ROM, not CD-ROM as well? thanks |

Playing DVD in Windows Media Player 9.0 for Windows 98SE
First, you can't play a DVD disc on a CDROM drive. So yes, you have to have
a DVD drive before you can watch DVDs on your computer. Second, there are no "approved" decoders for Windows 98 - what you will likely have to do is purchase a program that plays DVD movies on Windows 98, and when it installs its codecs they will also work in Windows Media Player. -- Richard G. Have you tried the built-in DVD player in Media Player Classic for Win98/ME?:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/vi...r_win98_me.cfm I find it a simpler app than WMP9, for DVD and .vob file viewing. Of course, you need a DVD drive in order to run a DVD disc. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "mistral" wrote in message ... Sorry, I don't know of a single free codec for Windows 98. Try Google but
prepare yourself for disappointment. -- Richard G. Harper [MVP Shell/User] * PLEASE post all messages and replies in the newsgroups * for the benefit of all. [] However, it wasn't clear whether you have a DVD drive anyway; if not, and you have to buy one, it ought to be possible to find one that comes with some suitable software - in theory costing more, but shop around, the extra price of this sort of software if sold with a drive can be less than the difference in price for the drive between one seller and another. |

Media Player Classic includes the needed codecs to view DVDs such as commercial DVD
movies, and .vob files. As suggested in another reply here, most new DVD players (drives) come with software to view DVDs. Most come with either PowerDVD or WinDVD, which bring along the needed codecs for standard DVDs. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "mistral" wrote in message ...
