Trying to get computer back to normal
I had several problems with my computer. It would freeze, no sound, unable to
adjust the display, had trouble connecting to the internet, dll's missing or corrupt etc. So I spent the last two weeks looking thru the postings and fixing it. It was very challenging because I would fix something and then something else would go wrong. But thanks to all the people who post answers, I was able to fix most of my problems. So give yourselves a pat on the back. After fixing everything, when I go back and check things I find a few listings that I'm not sure to ignore or try to fix. 1) System Information Summary - Components - Storage - Problem Devices - ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IR... ; PNP Device ID: ACPI\*PNP0C0F\00000003; Error Code 22 System Information Summary - Software Environment - Drivers - redbook,rt,sbemul, wdmaud, wdmfs; Type:Kernel Driver; State:Not Available; Status:Not Available 2) DirectX Diagnostic Tool - Input - Problems were found in the system registry. Details are available in the saved text file. 3) Control Panel - NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager Icon is on there but I don't have this program on my computer. I tried to delete the icon. When I right click it the only options a Open; Create Shortcut. 4) System Configuration Utility - System.ini (looks alot different) 5) Microsoft Internet Explorer - History - Only shows "Today" (nothing else, ex. a week ago, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) I think that's it for now. I am working on two other problems but the posting are listed for them. Can anyone give me information as to ignore these problems or (how to) try to fix them. On #'s 2 and 4 I don't know how to show you details. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. |

Thank you Mike, for your help.
I read the posting you referred me to but what about the second part of that problem? 1) System Information Summary - Software Environment - Drivers- redbook,rt,sbemul, wdmaud, wdmfs; Type:Kernel Driver; State: Not Available; Status: Not Available. (Can this also be ignored?) 2)DirectX Diagnostic- Error message: Registry error found Key "HKCR\CLSID\{92187326-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\ProgID" is missing. 3)I did remove NVIDIA program from my computer but the icon is still in my Control Panel. (Can this also be ignored?) Yes. Not a problem at all. I have exactly the same entries here. 2)DirectX Diagnostic- Error message: Registry error found Key "HKCR\CLSID\{92187326-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\ProgID" is missing. This is a common error and relates to a missing entry used by joysticks. This can be safely ignored. If however you want to fix it send me an e-mail and I will send you a file you can merge with the registry to add back the missing entries which were quite possibly removed by using a registry cleaner of some sort. Alternatively open notepad and paste the four lines below between the +++++ (but not the lines with the +++) into notepad ++++++++++++++ REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{92187326-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\ProgID] @="Game Controllers CPL Handler" ++++++++++++++ Now save to your desktop as a file called "Repair.reg" - include the quotes otherwise notepad will add a .txt extension and you don't want that to happen. Right click on the file fix.reg which should have an icon of a white sheet with a pile of blue blocks in front of it and select Merge. 3)I did remove NVIDIA program from my computer but the icon is still in my Control Panel. I can't remove it. I'm sorry I don't have any systems here with nVidia graphics cards so don't know the name of the file involved which should have been removed when you uninstalled the nVidia video drivers. You can either hide it in the Control Panel by using TweakUI or alternatively look for the file and delete it. Start by looking for a file with a name like nview.cpl 4)System Configuration Utility - System.ini I don't know how to copy this to show it to you. Without knowing what the problem is it is difficult to know what to suggest as a solution. What is the problem? If its an entry in system.ini that you don't understand copy and paste the entry into your reply. 5)Microsoft Internet Explorer - History Has been taken care of. Thank You! That's good to read. -- Mike Maltby |

Trying to get computer back to normal
Hello Mike (or anyone)!
I'm so excited that I'm taking care of these problems. 1) Okay to ignore. Good! Done! 2) I did as instructed. I Merged it. Rechecked the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. No more problems. Great! 3) I looked thru the files, found, and deleted it. Rechecked Control Panel and it was gone. Bravo! 4) Here is a copy of my system.ini file. I don't understand it. Not Mike, but I'll try to substitute until he appears later.... Noel/Sandra,
I think that might have been a full copy of the system.ini file and as you say it looks as if at some stage it was cross-linked with a boot log - Sandra, that's everything before the [Password Lists] all of which can be safely deleted. 6) System Information Summary - Components - Multimedia - CD Rom - Media loaded: No; Status: Unknown Nothing unexpected or unusual there. Without a CD inserted the status will always be Unknown. Check again but this time have a CD in the drive and you should now see Status OK. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows [2001-2006] Noel Paton wrote: Sandra Not Mike, but I'll try to substitute until he appears later.... Thank you for your responses. I love how you do that. I am not sure how to send you my system.ini file. But here is how I did it. Start - Run - Msconfig - OK - Extract file - System.ini - Start - Restore From: C:\Windows\System - Save file in: C:\Windows\Desktop\System.ini - OK - The folder does not exist. Do you want to create it? Yes - OK - OK - The folder is now on Desktop - Double clicked it - Double clicked System - Edit Select All - Edit Copy - Placed the cursor on this reply - Control V - Here it is. That's a very long-winded, and error-prove way of going about a very simple
operation!!! Go to Start |Run type System.ini click OK (System .ini should open in notepad) click inside the Notepad window, hit CTRL+A CTRL+C then paste the result into your response! -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Sandra (ugogrlfrnd)" wrote in message ...
