Default Briefcase Merge Handler Error

I get an error message

"filename will not be updated because the merge handler cannot be
loaded"

Any ideas?

Standard cure for such problems is to uninstal
then reinstal the app, here your Briefcast.
Have you tried that?

Just tried it but can't find a remove Briefcase option in Control
Panel\add/remove programs. Where does the app lurk?

Unfortunately not. Some more info might help.

The briefcase is on a portable - win98/Office 2000.
The master copy is in My Docs on a desktop machine - win 98/Office 97

I have found this problem with Excel workbooks, not tried any other
apps.

There is full network access on both machines and the files are not read
only.

If the file on the portable is modified Update is OK
If the file on the desktop machine is modified Update is OK

But if both files are modified then Merge fails with the merge handler
error message.

Control panel, add remove programs, windows setup tab, double click
accessories. Remove the mark from briefcase, OK your way out, reboot and
add the mark back.

You might want to post to an Excel or Office newsgroup

Went there yesterday but I don't have a briefcase tab. There isn't one
on the desktop machine either!
