windows protection fault

Twice now my win98se machine has gone into a loop whereas
it haults during start-up, just after the drivers start
loading, and gives the error message " windows protection
fault- you need to restart your computer". computer
restarts to desktop when I select "safe mode". I've tried
disabling all start up items using msconfig, to no avail.
It does sound like a driver issue, but I can't locate the
problem. In the days before one of these major crashes I
get several freeze-ups on random programs. I've done re-
installs, clean installs, but the only thing that works
is to reformat then clean install.

NVidia 256 32Mb ddr
80g WD Hd
512Mb generic ram
17" ViewSonic
ECS mb K7VTA3 (weak link, I know)
