Default Win98 REPAIR/REINSTALL?

Hi folks,

I have a friends PC here, running Win98, but will not go into Windows.
It reports a problem with the HDD. I am trying to run scandisk but that
hangs. I am also trying to run a HDD diagnostic utility.

If I get lucky and "fix" the drive -can I do a "repair" install to Win
98? If so, how?

Thanks, Fred

Fix the hard drive problem first. Depending on the seriousnees of it,
you may not be able to salvage the drive at all. Or it may be that
the diagnostic utility may fix the problem completely. Note that the
best diagnostic utility for any hard drive is usually the free one
from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.

You can usually reinstall Windows 98 over top of itself, using the
original Windows 98 installation CD. If the Windows 98 is an OEM
version then there may be a copy of the installation files in the
c:\windows\options\cabs folder. If these are present then I have
usually found it best to run the install from that folder rather than
from the CD.

Good luck

Ron,

Thanks, that's where I am already. Scandisk is now looking for crosslinked
files after the drive utility reported and confirmed HDD problems. I'm
trying to just get it going so we can transfer data as soon as possible.

Thanks, Again, Fred

Perhaps you should remove that drive and change its jumpers to slave
and put it in another machine and copy it from there.
