Default Win Explorer "not responding"...Help please

Win98se
DVD reader/writer
CD/DVD reader
512mb ram
Athlon 2.2 CPU
Nvidea GF4 4x Max display card
OE and IE v 6

Occassionally I have a problem with windows explorer (v6) "not responding",
after I try to access a CD in the CD/DVD reader(JLMS), although the previous
CD access was successful...all the cd's check out ok....Ido not get an error
message, just unable to do ANYTHING on the desktop area....reboot and ok
again, until it happens again, but unpredictable when. I discover the "not
responding" when I hit ctl,alt,del.
have search the NG here but no joy.
The PC is about 15 months old.
Unable to find a driver update for the JLMS drive(166s), in case it was
that.?
Re-install win explorer? unsure how if this is the case.?
I have run spyware and anti-virus progs...all ok.!
One thing to mention is the "DMA" checkbox for the CD/DVD drives....both
currently unticked, but read somewhere to "tick" one or both DMA boxes, but
cannot remember where or when.

TIA
TIA

Try cleaning the lens in the drive with an inexpensive audio CD player cleaning
disc.

Direct Memory Access (DMA), as long as the drives are DMA-capable (and most any
DVD reader or writer should be), you should enable DMA on the settings tab for the
drive, in Device Manager, and then reboot. Likewise for the hard drive, if it is
new enough to support DMA. The documentation that came with the drives, or online
documentation at the manufacturer's support web site, should mention whether
enabling DMA is recommended.

Troubleshoot CD-R_W

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=218617
Troubleshoot CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

I guess, a first try would be...

(1) Boot to Safe Mode. (Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the
Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that.)
(2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".
(3) Open the CD-ROM branch, by clicking it's plus sign.
(4) Highlight each drive in that branch, & click "Remove".
(Safe Mode may reveal the presence of a "ghost".)
(5) Close up, & boot to Normal Mode.

Hopefully Windows will find the correct drivers, & all will be well.

PCR and other posts.
Thank you for the posts....I will read and try the various options you offer
over the next couple of weeks and see if or which party is the "culprit" ??
At present I am by-passing the desktop shortcuts to each CD/DVD drive to
eliminate that part.....if that is feasable ?
Due to my problem being intermittent it may be a while before I can post
back my findings etc.

DVD R/W should have dma enabled, most burner software won't work with it if
its not.
CD/DVD reader, not real critical, but helps to have dma enabled.

You are welcome. Keep us informed. Right, do not click your shortcuts
until the problem is solved, I think.
