Default Which version?

An HP Pavilion 6630 that I just salvaged (from the side of the road)
has a working version of Windows 98 on it. From a command prompt, VER
results in 4.10.2222.

How can I tell whether this is Windows 98, ME or SE?

Dan

Windows 95. [Version 4.00.950]
Windows 98 Standard Edition [Version 4.10.1998]
Windows 98 Second Edition [Version 4.10.2222]
Windows ME [Version 4.90.3000]
Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]
Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
Windows Server 2003 [Version 5.2.3790]

Not positive on the last 4, but the first 3 are correct,
and the last 4 came from the same source.
I'd have to dig out all my OS disks to make sure.

You can always do a directory listing of the Windows
directory, and look at the file dates to help double-check......

I was just running XP on a 500MHz Compaq w/ 128MB RAM. Definitely needs more
RAM, which I'll try tomorrow. But that speed is tolerable unless you're
doing massive operations. Hasn't fallen seriously short except in image
rendering (needs more RAM.)

128 megs of RAM will make Win98 run just great. 500 MHz Celeron is a

little too weak for XP.

Believe it or not.....I have XP Home installed on a 350MHz PII. RAM is probably
most important, as you know. Nothing less than 256MB RAM is what I recommend (tho
the PII I mentioned only has 96MB at the moment).

Turning off the eye candy in XP helps on slower systems with minimal RAM:
Right-click My Computer Properties Advanced tab Performance section, Settings
button choose "Adjust for best performance" or "Custom" and turn off most or all
Click OK.

Happy Birthday, Gary!

Happy Birthday, maestro!.

[I was gonna use another 51 exclamation points,
but thought better of it.]

Now, take the rest of the day off and go have fun!!
