Windows ME Explorer hangs up
I am attempting to help out a friend of mine who has a desktop computer with
Windows ME on it. The machine is an HP which came with Win ME installed, but he has no Win ME installation CD. It appears that he has some corrupted system files, since each time any action that invokes Windows Explorer is chosen the system hangs up until Explorer is terminated. Internet Explorer does work correctly, and all other functions. Does anyone have any idea how to repair this problem? |

Windows ME Explorer hangs up
You imply that other functions work whist Windows Explorer is 'locked-up'
(e.g you can close WE) so I guess that you can be running other applications whilst WE is locked. I don't have any simple answers but a couple of questions. At what point in opening WE does it hang? Immediately, do you get a display of your folders (and contents), or whilst actually attempting to browse? Any error reports? Does WE also hang when running Safe Mode? If not, then it *could* be a Registry issue. Might be worth looking for a System Restore or scanreg /restore point especially if the problem has only 'recently' occurred. (I appreciate it's your friends computer and not your own, but he may have some idea when it started to play-up.) Regarding the missing WinMe Installation CD, you may find (if you are lucky and the computer manufacturer has allowed it) a folder containing a complete set of installation files on the C: drive. If so, it *should be* in the C:Windows\Options\Instal or CABS folder - however the OEM (manufacturer) may have put them elsewhere (or not at all) The folder contains about 150MB of sub-folders and files (about 15 or so - being WIN_XX.CAB series) and includes a setup.exe file. If that fodder exists and you can copy and burn it to a CD, then you can create an Installation CD yourself. Mart "John B." John wrote in message ... Can't be sure if you're physically opening Windows Explorer or it's opening
when you're requesting something else. When opened, if the resources show less than half a gig, this could be the problem. Also run scandisc to fix Xlinked files. If you think you have a problem, I've been trying to fix a friend's Mac with an 8.5 OS and TCP/IP malfunction. -- I mastered Wordstar graphics! Windows ME Explorer hangs up
Mart,
Thanks for the tips on where I might find the installation files. I plan to be over there tomorrow and will check out his computer for the CAB (or other file folders). Once I read this note from you, I recalled that HP sometimes places the system files in CAB folders. Unfortunately my friend has had his hard drive replaced (larger) some time ago by a third party and they may not have "ghosted" all of the files on the original drive -- I will check. the second part of your question, (and Corday's), the system locks whether I open WE directly or do some other operation that invokes WE. When I open it directly, it only shows some of the folders that are on the machine and then hangs. I can then go into Windows Task Manager and "Explorer" does not show that it is "not responding", but if I terminate it, the rest of the applications work until the next time something invokes the WE function. I can get into the internet using IE and can also get into the local drives through IE, so I can look for files. I can also go into MS DOS from Win ME, but in my prior experience, that has always been a rather unstable environment, so I am not using it extensively. No error reports. I have not yet tried the safe mode, but will tomorrow. I did run a registry scan check using a "PC Utilities" tool and it found a bunch of registry errors, that I have subsequently fixed -- however the problem remains. I also looked for a Restore point, but apparently the owner has never established one. No Backup, No Updates, No Installation CD, No emergency start disk and an obsolete operating system -- I am really starting on this on the uphill slope. I won't argue with that g I also looked for a Restore point, but apparently the owner has never established one. OK, so try scanreg /restore. You *might* find a decent registry saved there - but be aware, once you use it, you don't get a second chance at it. (You might want to copy the 'backup files' elsewhere before you start, as a safety measure. They are 'normally' about 5 or 6 .CAB files, in the Windows\sysbackup folder) As a matter of interest, what happens if you try the old File Manager program, winfile.exe. If necessary, use Start | Run an type "winfile" (no quotes) in the dialogue box. I might just give you some stay of execution. If you still get nowhere, I suppose you could try scanreg /fix. But your comments about using a "PC Utilities" program - a registry cleaner perhaps? - suggest that your 'uphill slope' might just turn out to be a cliff face. Regarding a Startup Floppy, assuming you can't make your own Startup floppy disk (using Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs - Startup Disk) then you can download an utility to create one. You can download a WinMe Bootdisk making utility (select the 'Windows Me OEM' option) from :- http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm **But be sure to read the instructions on how to actually create the bootdisk** - which are essentially :- Don't just copy the download to a floppy disk, download the file onto your computer (any computer, with an A:drive) and then you MUST run the file for it to actually create the Startup (floppy) disk. Just follow the screen instructions.
