Replacement for Ad-Aware SE
NT4.0, like 95, is just about at the stage where it makes as much sense to
run either one of those as it does WFWG. Certainly, if one cares about avoiding malware. http://oldfiles.org.uk/powerload/tmeline2.htm It wouldn't be a problem for me, however, despite writing this as I am in 98SE. I must have got so confused with all the different OSes I run, or have run, in recent years, that the only version of 95 I've installed on this particular machine is 95A, as I've failed four times these past few days to set 95B up anything like satisfactorily! And above 2.1GHz is a waste of time anyway, it appears, even having figured out how to apply the AMD K6 fix when one cannot boot Windows! And I haven't even managed to get online with it in VPC (but recently was, hence being reminded of the version of Windows Update it uses. So I must have been using the 16 bit version without realising it! I'm not sure about the processor speed issue in VPC). Anyway, I had problems with the current build of Spybot (1.6.0) in both 98SE and 2000. They took so long to immunise that I reverted to 1.4. Then saw Lightspeed's assertion that 1.6.0 works fine in 95, so when the update was offered in the two later Windows versions, I decided to give it another go. That is why I am in 98SE right now, I just (re-)installed Spybot 1.6.0, having previously done so in 2000 - and in both OSes it now runs fine! Why this is so, I do not know. Perhaps it has something to do with updating from 1.4, as opposed to fresh installing. Or perhaps it is to do with reverting from 1.6.0, then installing 1.4, then re-installing 1.6.0! Who TF knows! Perhaps it has something to do with the burger I had for dinner tonight. It had cheese on it. Shane "webster72n" wrote in message ... MalwareBytes requires WinNT v. 4.0.or later. H. "Heather" wrote in message ... Hi Joanie..... I have been trying out one called Malware Bytes. It found two really old registry entries that none of the others found. One of the writers is someone I know and he laughed when I told him what it found. One was from something called WeatherBug.....don't even remember using it. If you want the link, I will get it. It only takes 4 minutes to do a quick scan and that is way better than SuperAntispyware which takes 20. But they all have their own niche spots......I did get rid of AdAware, but I find that Spybot takes EONS to run. However I usually do that one every week. Cheers......and I will catch you guys up on the latest via email....Figgs "Joan Archer" wrote in message ... I use SpywareBlaster but the one I have for anti spyware instead of Ad-Aware is SuperAntiSpyware, they have a free version or the paid Pro version which is permanently monitoring. -- Joan Archer http://www.freewebs.com/crossstitcher http://lachsoft.com/photogallery "PAT (Paul)" wrote in message ... Hi every one, Back from across the pond. Glad to see this groups is still alive and kicking. Noticed that most members got rid of Ad-Aware SE. Anyone can suggest a replacement (free is possible). I had heard of Spyware Terminator at www.spywareterminator.com before leaving 5 months ago, but didnt have the time to act on it. Your opinion appreciated. Glad to be back to this group. Replacement for Ad-Aware SE
Thank you all. Seems its between Spyware Terminator and SUPERAntiSpyware. As
for Spyware Blaster, I already use it as well as Spyware Guard. I'm doing a cleanup of old apps: Ad-Aware SE, CWShredder.. and maybe SpybotS&D, its very slow and not sure if it can be updated without removing the old version. Paul -- cogito ergo sum "Shane" wrote: |
