Default Dual Boot Problem

i had installed two windows win98 & win2k on my pc
then i un-installed win2k
but every time when i start my pc a screen display with
two options that choose a window to start win98 or win2k
either i've un-installed the win2k
some one ask me to modify it
some one told me to delete it as win98 doesnt need
boot.ini
my question is "is that true that i could delete the
boot.ini file coz win98 doesnt need it"
or try to modify the boot.ini file
please & thankx

Default Dual Boot Problem

Hi Sandra,

I *think* I am the one that made the reference that Win 98
does not use the boot.ini file. Unfortunately, I am not sure
it is as simple as just deleting it.

The thing is that Win 98 and 2000 boot in different ways.
The boot ini is just a way of "unifying" them so that you
have a choice as to which you want to boot, then depending
on that choice, the boot sequence for each starts up.

As Win98 does not need the boot.ini to boot, I am sure that
there is a way to configure your PC so that boot.ini does not
have to be present. As I mentioned in the other post, I have
donde such installations, but I have never removed Win 2000,
so I can't say what step to take to "fix" your problem.

The suggestion about running fdisk /mbr sounds solid, but
I would not do it or anything else before confirming that it
works. I am glad you posted here. I am sure some one will be
able to help you out.

Best of luck!
Saga

Default Dual Boot Problem

Boot with a 98(FE/SE) startup floppy (use your current working version to
create the floppy) and do "SYS C:" to insure the proper files are present on
the hard disk. Next boot using hard disk should go right into 98. Then
delete Boot.ini.

I've dumped a couple of dual boot's that way.
