Default Startup error message

Hi all

I have recently installed Norton Antivirus on my system with which i found
loads of security risk trojans etc on my machine which i have now cleaned up,
now everytime i now start my PC i get an error message saying 'Missing
ibm00003.exe, unable to locate file' and am now unable to get rid of this
annoying message. I have looked on Google etc for fixes and all it tells me
is that the ibm00003.exe file is some sort of virus, if so why is Win ME
giving me this message as if it needs it to run? please can someone help me
sort this error out.

Many thanks in advance

Matt

Check in MSCONFIG to see where the reference to it in the Startup list
lies - then remove the reference from the source (or if you're unsure, just
uncheck the entry in the Startup listing)

Matt,

Quite possibly because you have chosen to install one of the worst AV
applications that is publicly available and can cause major problems when
installed on Win Me. In this case it would appear that Norton has as
usual has quite possibly failed to do its job properly and left the entry
used to launch the virus in the startup axis.

Use MSConfig (Start, Run, enter MSConfig in the box and click OK), open
the startup tab and look for and uncheck any entry that references the
file ibm00003.exe. Click OK, Apply and reboot. Hopefully you will not now
see the message about ibm00003.exe. Ignore the message about being in
selective startup mode and check the box not to display the message again.

Default Startup error message

Hi Noel

I have looked through MSCONFIG startup items and there is nothing in there
which it could be connected to, the main things that are enabled on startup
are mainly Norton, Task Mon and a couple of other standard things, have tried
unticking them but with no change. Any other ideas?

Thanks

The references are there - believe me! (I was one of the first to find that
particular variant)
If you can't find them there, use MSINFO32 and copy paste the startup
section of a saved output to your response.

There should be many more that 3 items checked - particularly with Norton
installed!

If you've really only got three entries in MSConfig startup checked then
you have REAL problems far greater than having the Norton virus and
ibm00003 installed.

All the ones you have unchecked in the past, especially all those that
form part of the operating system and allow it to perform as intended.
Alternatively why not follow Noel's suggestion and post the list to this
thread so we can tell you which you should have checked.
