Didn't receive any bites on my earlier request, thus did a complete system
re-install using a couple of Compaq CD's from a couple of years ago when I
had to replace my hard drive. Followed instruction for a Factory Restore.
Upon startup I started experiencing similar errors related to msxml.dll,
mshtml.dll, shell32.dll. Thinking a faulty install I reinstalled again but
continued to receive various errors, i.e. Kernell32.dll, jscript.dll,
msjet40.dll and comctl32.dll.

Tried going directly to to Windows Update and if one of the above errors
didn't stop me, Windows advised that no updates available. Incredible after
4 years or so !

Is anything happening here obvious to those of you that do this frequently ?

This looks very like a hardware problem!
Such errors are often caused by problems with the RAM - download DocMemory
from www.simmtester.com and create the boot disk. Use this to boot the PC,
and run the test overnight to check the RAM thoroughly.
See what it reports.

I was thinking that even thought the info said outright that it was doing a
full install and that I would lose any data, that in fact it may simply have
done an over-install.

Just in case this offers a clue, after the install, on one of the few
occasions when I could get to the 'net, I downloaded Avast to file, but for
some reason it wouldn't install; it reported something being corrupt. I
think I downloaded
it 2/3 times and never once got it to install correctly.

In any event, I'll download the DocMemory and run the test. I just recently
installed an additional 256 MB RAM, bringing me to the maximum of 320 MB
allowed on this Laptop.

I'll also approach HP and ask for different instructions to ensure I am in
fact achieving what they now call a "destructive" install.

Thanks for your help

You're right again, Mr. Paton.

I ran DocMemory and while I don't have specific details, I can say that it
passed the first test and failed 42 tests. I replaced the recently purchased
256 MB RAM chip early this morning with the original 64 MB chip and so far
it's passed the first 14 tests with no failures.

So I guess it's back to the shop where I purchased the chip to see if I can
get a replacement, even though I discarded the invoice.

Thanks again Noel, it is appreciated.

Replaced the 256 MB chip. Now trying to reinstall the O/S but my
QuickRestore CD's might be corrupt because screen goes blank after about a
minute. Might have to order a new set! Oh how I wish I didn't but an OEM, at
least I would have the damn disk!

What's your total RAM in the system? - try reducing it to just 256MB and
running the install

Total Ram is at the maximum of 320MB. Actually your diagnosis was spot on,
Noel. Changed the new chip and the errors stopped. I had had trouble doing a
clean install, obviously because of the faulty chip, but at some point the
Restore CD's may have become corrupt. These are the same CD's I used when I
replaced the hard drive a couple of years ago; the O/S was installed on two
partitions. Now, it looks like I got the system installed but on only one
partition. Not sure what else is missing, if anything. Strange also, because
I actually stopped the process a number of times because it wasn't doing
what it was supposed to do. However when I rebooted, the O/S was up and
running.

Although it's running quite well, I ordered replacement CD's from Compaq/HP
and may redo the whole thing upon receipt, or I might just wait til I
experience another problem and do it then. It's just a pita to transfer all
the personal stuff off it and then to do all the updates.

Thanks for your continued support. I'll keep you posted, if and when
something happens.

Dan
