Imagine this - another SYSTEM RESTORE PROBLEM - go figure!
When I try to use System Restore from the normal mode, it locks up. When I try to use System Restore from Start Run scanreg /restore, the checkpoints do not go back far enough. When I try to use System Restore from safe mode, first I get an error message from McAfee that reads:
The file C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES\HELPCTR.EXE contains suspicious script activity and has been stopped. Then, it gives me the option to continue anyway and I proceed. When I select a checkpoint, it locks up. Now, what??? Oh - the bittersweet cyber-world of computers. Thanks for reading this and thanks for your time. SaSha |

Excuse you and your oh, holier than thou world. You have no reason at all to criticize me! I would have expected more from an MVP. Pity there are still people like you that feel the need to post without having anything constructive to say. Pfffffftttttt! Now, I will get out the toilet paper to wipe my monitor off after you defecating on it. How about the bitter and sorry world of those with the likes of you?
In regards to scanreg /restore, that information was given to a friend of mine by another MVP. You know those people with the same title as you. SaSha "Mike M" wrote in message ... To repeat my earlier comment, system restore is totally unrelated to and
has nothing whatsoever to do with scanreg but then what would I know about it when faced by someone like yourself who seemingly knows everything. The only thing they have in common is that both are mechanisms that can be used to restore a backed up copy of the registry. System Restore does and can do far more except where crippled by the installation of incompatible software. Incidentally which MVP claims that system restore and scanreg are the same? I'd be interested in contacting them and hearing their side however I'm somewhat sceptical that you will be able to provide the name as I doubt that any Microsoft MVP has ever made such a statement. BTW "MVP" isn't a title but rather an annual award given by Microsoft to those who try to assist others by various means including these newsgroups. I won't be posting further to this thread as you appear to prefer to criticise those who might be able to help. You might however help yourself if you were to post details of the problem you are trying to resolve by using system restore as there are quite possibly other methods you can use to fix the problem. Fixing your system restore problem will probably mean the loss of any checkpoints you have at present so it might be best to first fix your other unnamed problem before trying to repair system restore. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP SaSha wrote: Excuse you and your oh, holier than thou world. Dear Noel-
Will you please inform me what I can do to get system restore to work? Please let us not debate over McAfee. I have used this company for 6 years and will continue until I see a reason not to. There is another cause I cannot use System Restore. I know this, because I have used System Restore with McAfee throughout the years. Your help will be greatly appreciated. In article , SaSha says...
When I try to use System Restore from the normal mode, it locks up. Yep. Something is wrong. Hard to tell from that, but... When I try to use System Restore from Start Run scanreg /restore... Ooops. That just repairs the registry by pulling up an earlier backup of the registry. It has nothing to do with System Restore. I have not tried running System Restore in that fashion; but, based on the shortcut properties, I think you want something like: Start Run rstrui I have no idea if there are even any command line switches with that. I'd try it from an MS-DOS box, but I have no reason to. ...the checkpoints do not go back far enough. Those would be the registry backups, yes? But the System Restore checkpoints will only go back as far as there is memory to hold any. At some point, when the allocated storage limit is reached, the oldest restore checkpoint will be purged to allow room for the latest. When I try to use System Restore from safe mode, first I get an error message from McAfee that reads: The file C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES\HELPCTR.EXE contains suspicious script activity and has been stopped. Then, it gives me the option to continue anyway and I proceed. Can't you just disable the McAfee on access scan during this operation? The whole point of starting in Safe Mode is to minimize the background processes which are running during the System Restore operation. Obviously, SR is going to make changes to the system areas on the disk. McAfee will try to prevent that; that is part of what it does. When I select a checkpoint, it locks up. At this point McAfee has probably caused corruption in the System Restore database during its effort to protect your system from malicious activity. You probably no longer have a viable System Restore point. Hope you imaged your HDD. Now, what??? Oh - the bittersweet cyber-world of computers. Pull out the system image CDs, tapes, or whatever; re-image the system. Or, back up your critical data, and configuration files, and to a repair reinstall. Thanks for reading this and thanks for your time. I'd actually even say, "You're welcome"; but your treatment of others offering assistance leads me to think that would be akin to casting pearls before swine. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |
