sound problem & lost W98 tshoot wizard
I have windows 98 and lately I noticed that my PC plays
sound such as Windows shutdown, new mail notification etc.. etc.. but the soundstops suddenly i.e it is not the same as it was before. Can someone suggest a cure? I tried using the W98 Trouble shooter wizard but all I get is a blank page. Apparently some windows update took away the trouble shooter wizard. I tried the "online trouble shooter" at http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot but that was no help. Does anybody knows if there has been any Microsoft updates to get back the Trouble shooter wizard? |

Can someone suggest a cure? Control Panel Sounds, remove them if you wish. If not, try removing/re-enabling to see if it helps. Check the Sound adapter in the machine to make sure it is fully seated and all wires/connections are properly seated. Try updating the drivers from the manufacturers site per their instructions. Does anybody knows if there has been any Microsoft updates to get back the Trouble shooter wizard? There is AFAIK, never going to be an update to get the wizards back. For more info and workarounds see: There are 2 separate critical updates that caused the TShoot Wizards to stop working. For more info and ways to use the wizards, see: http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Wi...98_Tshootr.htm 1st occurence: If you do not already have "Show All Files" checked in folder options, you need to do that first. To show all files, open My Computer, click on View Folder Options View tab. Under the heading Hidden Files place a check next to Show All Files, Apply/Ok out. Now find the Tshoot.inf file which should be in c:\windows\inf, right click on it and select Install from the popup list. Have your Win cd on hand. Second occurrence, only has workarounds to use the Tshoot Wizards: This is because the latest critical update (Q824145) places a kill bit on the ActiveX control tshoot.ocx. What is not recommended is removing the update or the kill bit altogether as this will open up the vulnerabilities the update fixes, which is more than killing tshoot.ocx. MS-MVP George (Bindar Dundat) has created a fix that will open the tshooter and remove the kill bit. Once you close the tshooter it replaces the kill bit. ----------------- or here in case the first link is down: http://home.comcast.net/~bascon58/98Help.htm -- Brian A. One more thing on the Sound issue.
Go to Start Run, type in: dxdiag and press Enter Run the tests for your sound and see if anything comes up. -- Brian A. Jack of all trades, Master of none.
