Default startup/add/remove programs

when using system configuration utility program, startup tab,
cleanup box, I still have several instances of the same program
listed. I would like to have just one instance of any startup
program listed. Add/Remove programs doesn't list any program until
I scroll down a bit. So I also would like a better program. Does
anyone know of a better startup program and a better add/remove
program? Thanks for any advise.

Default startup/add/remove programs

Careful, at least one program should appear twice, namely
LoadPowerProfile, as each entry has a different purpose however neither
imposes any load on the system as each runs for maybe a millisecond before
exiting.

Note that using MSConfig is not the way to remove most items from the
startup list but rather you should be using the applications own setup or
configuration options otherwise you will find the startup entry being
automatically restored each time you use your system resulting in two
entries in MSConfig | Startup, one checked and one unchecked.

So I also would like a better program.

You have one already, it's called regedit and allows you to edit the
registry directly but using it takes care as it is so easy to make a
system unusable by editing or removing the wrong key or value.

Ah, that reply was referring to MSConfig but I now realise you meant a
better program than Add/Remove Programs. Well as I don't quite understand
what your problem here might be I have nothing to suggest but Add/Remove
Programs | Install/Uninstall is simply listing various entries in the
registry and allowing you to then easily edit or remove the program
involved. If Add/Remove Programs is slow to populate the
Install/Uninstall list then this might suggest one of a slow processor,
limited RAM or a large number of installed programs.

Thanks Eric, I tried it but it didn't relist the programs starting
from the top of the viewing window. It said there was no
corruption. I was hoping for a bigger more complete program that
takes the time to check each entry. I hate it when the program
asks if I want to delete a listed entry because it can't be found.
I forget which programs I've deleted. The program should have
been delisted when it was uninstalled. But it wasn't so Add/Remove
programs is flawed, faulty, could be better.

Gary

To manage the startup, you may want to consider downloading a neat little
free utility that will manage this for you. You can get Startup Control
Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin at; www.mlin.net .

Hope this helps

Look for add/remove replacement. Someone did a job with an XP style window,
I'm guessing. I like it because the WME one is too small, especially if you
have a lot of stuff. But be careful with options such as show system
components. Sometimes I won't recognize something in the list and hope that
change or reinstall will be option. And if not, there is system restore,
right?
I clicked on something hoping for that action, instead in the blink of an
eye it gutted it, system restore, pchealth, and all that stuff.

Turn on the advanced options in Spybot and look at the startup. It gives
options to toggle on/off and totally remove entries.
But it seems likely there will be other stuff left behind in the registry.
Time to pick your poison. Mike and a few others would likely recommend a
clean install. I would try a judicious use of a registry cleaner. That is
one that makes a backup of anything it pulls. And maybe can open the
questionable item in regedit so you can look more deeply. And never let it
automatically do it's thing. How cautious am I? Well, I have a ton of
references left over from Office97 when I installed Office 2K. The reason I
did it is I have a program that adds many templates to Office 97 and they
are usable when upgrading to 2K. I could not get them to work if Office 97
was not installed first. It appears that Of2K reuses some of the install
locations from Of97, rather than it's default locations. So far this has not
been a problem for me. I'd also bet those links to missing Of97 help files
are worthless, but just haven't found a time to fully investigate.

Also sometimes, you might end up with multiple references in the startup for
the same item. May be a system restore issue, say it was unchecked, you
restore, and the state from the restoe was checked. Sometimes checking both,
rebooting, gets rid of the extra.
good luck

Default startup/add/remove programs

Hi Mike and all.
I've had those multiple entries pop up on me.
But first, the two power profiles are under different keys.

How I ended up with multiple entries was from programs that install
something to the startup. One such put a register reminder there. Nusance
since they no longer accept and the only way to stop it is uncheck. And
another is the required for my multipass all in one printer. The server eats
some resources so I choose to manually start it when I want to print or scan
or FAX. If a program problem is suspected and I choose to reinstall,
uninstall & install, it will not remove the unchecked item, and the install
places another.
So it seems best, if I remember, to recheck the associated item before
uninstalling.
I have used the method of rechecking both and hoping one goes away upon
reboot, as pointed in my previous post. But on at least a couple of
occaisons that did not work. That is when I used spybot to eliminate the
extra.
I also have some offending program that adds a totally blank line, except
that it says it is under the per user run key. And spybot wrongly claims it
is a worm.

That RemoveWhitespaceFromAddRemovePrograms.EXE works for XP when there is a
blank space in Add/Remove programs with programs listed further down. I
believe you said it was doing that, though I haven't seen it in WinME so I
wasn't sure if that same program would work there.

The proper way to get things out of startup is to find the configuration
screen for the program and deselect the run on startup option. If you don't
know what the program is, or it's one that insists on running something on
startup and doesn't give you the option not to, there are 2 places it is
likely running from.

1) Your Start menu. If you click on Start, then Programs, then Startup, you
see a list of programs that run on Startup. To remove them, you can right
click on them right there in that menu and select Delete, or select Cut then
right click on another folder or your desktop and select Paste. You could
also right click the word Startup and select Open or Explore and manage them
from there.

2) Your registry. To manage your registry click on Start, then Run, then
type REGEDIT. In the registry editor, first select File, Export. Enter a
file name and remember where it is. Then to clean out startup, delete
anything you like out of any folder name starting with Run, under the path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion
(Run/RunOnce/RunServices/etc). You can delete everything out of there
without hurting Windows. The worst that happens is a program loses a
required service. Most programs can add their own services back in. If a
program needs a service to run on startup and actually doesn't run properly
because of something that was removed, you can always add them back in by
running Regedit and selecting File, Import. If you Import right away, an
Export with Export Range All should be fine. If you wait awhile, you may
want to Import from an Export with selected branch for each Run branch you
edit.
