Unable Initialize Scan Engine / Cable modem not seen
(On behalf of friend, John, who can't get online)
Under Windows ME Overnight March 3, while pc off, unknown event resulted in following situation: 1. Booting requires repeated F1 to get by tecnical screens to signin to Windows ME. 2. At Desktop, message popup: "pcciomon - Unable to initialize scan engine." 3. Browser gives message "Server not found" (ISP reports server OK). 4. Problems persist after: a. Re-installing modem files from Motorola disk (cable modem, 6 months old), which checked pc as OK; b. Windows System Restore to March 1 (2 days before problems arose). c. Re-installing network drivers within Windows did not work. Can anyone help? Thanks. |

Hopefully, a replacement of your CMOS battery is all that is required. The
need to use F1 is usually an indication that it is exhausted. (Also can be confirmed by the clock and date being incorrect) HOWEVER ..... F1 calls can also result from a failing HDD. A scandisk of your HDD (preferably in Real Mode DOS [using the startup floppy disk] taking care NOT to allow a surface test until you've noted the error reports) is perhaps your next move. If errors are reported, back-up your essential data before proceeding and only then do a surface scan. At least you will have peace of mind if the disk proves OK and you can start looking for other causes. BTW - pcciomon appears to be associated with PC-Cillin 2000 antivirus software. Perhaps a visit to : - http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...CIOMONEXE.html might help. Mart, Thanks for your reply. Scandisk reports no errors.
PC-Cillin: subscription has expired; attempt to uninstall asked for App disk, which is not available. Is there an override in W ME? So hopefully, it looks like you've eliminated your HDD - that's good!
Regarding PC-Cillin, I've never used it on my boxes so don't know how to remove it. Perhaps a search thru' the following url *may* point you in the right direction :- http://www.trendmicro.com/download/ Until you are able to remove it, it's impossible from here to tell if PC-Cillin is causing your problems. Maybe someone else has had experience with it. I assume from your response that you've eliminated the CMOS battery therefore I think you may need to supply details of the error reports requesting the need for each of the F1 key operations. They might provide a clue. Under 'normal' conditions, the F1 key operation under WinMe is the Help shortcut Mart "JRMdialup" wrote in message ... Mart, Thanks for your reply. Unable Initialize Scan Engine / Cable modem not seen
Mart, I've read at Wikipedia that PC-Cillan 2007 has a fault that uses
"Internet Lock' to disable browsers and web page access -- which makes me wonder if v.2002 did something similar. The version we're trying to uninstall is 2002; I've asked Trend Micro if they have a fix (to uninstall without the App disk). Thanks for following this.
