Looking for Security Software for Win ME
Sorry, I don't understand the question.

Leonardo Da Vinci "EndUser" wrote in message ... OK. According to http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...n98MEusers.jsp "Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating system." So the Readme file for Zone Labs security software 6.1.744.001 March 16, 2006 is not correct. "Delboy" wrote in message ... I repeat. quote The last version ME compatible was 6.1.744.001 available at http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...seHistory.html Although it does not say on this page, my statement is correct. Go to the home page, forums and search "Windows ME". among the posts you will find confirmation that this version is the last ME version. V6.5 and higher require XP. I know this because when I tried to update to V6.5, a window opened stating XP was required. -- Delboy Many have made a trade of delusions and false miracles, deceiving the stupid multitude. Looking for Security Software for Win ME
I'm using Computer Associates Internet Security Suite, which quite often
Tiger has either as near free after rebate or thrown in with some hardware as free, on a WME machine. It seems to have everything, that is antivirus, firewall, anti-spam, & pest patrol. The firewall is ZoneAlarm, regarded as near best. All of it is quite configurable where as the free versions such as ZoneAlarm free and AVGfree are very limited. In addition I do run Spybot allowing it to block bad web pages. And I do have AdAware. But since running the CA suite, I seldom have anything found with either of those, ie, spybot & adaware, but I have customized settings in the firewall that kills cookies and some other stuff from sites I don't want to be bothered by. Do check to see which version Tiger may have at present. BTW, it also comes with K9 web protection program, but it only works on above W9x, so I've never used it. The antispam works with outlook and outlook express. Possibly others. It creates a separate folder for spam and filters according to your choice. It lets you know if new messages have been taken to that folder where they are still readable or you can choose to allow them to inbox. Anything that might slip by into the inbox can be blocked with one click. It learns as you use it. I very seldom have to block or retrieve messages anymore, even though it has some custom scanning and learning, I've never used them. PestPatrol scans critical areas for bugs, trojans, etc. Can be customized to scan anywhere. The ZA firewall (says eTrust, but compare interface and files and you'll see it is ZA) is very customizable. Much of it is auto-configurable, but you can change the settings. Easy to setup with internet and local network as well. Has program control, that is allows and filters programs that need internet/network access as well as component control. That way a trojan file can not hijack a good program to do its dirty business. Includes some email protections, such as looking for bad attachments, but the antispam portion gets the rest of it. Privacy settings put an end to bothersome internet trackers, cookies, etc. ID Lock using very high encryption allows storing important data, (passwords, ID's, card numbers, etc) This list of data is then checked against all outbound traffic and blocks the transmission until you give it permission. That way if you've done something online say using a credit card number and it somehow got stored on disk, this stops it. And the ability to totally lock connections when computer is not in use. Norman "webster72n" wrote in message ... "Lynn Quinlan" wrote in message ... Hi there, My 6-year-old Win ME computer was happily running some ISP supplied AV and firewall software until the ISP upgraded it to a newer version which is no longer supported on an ME system. They no longer issue or support the "old" version as it was with a different company. So, I'm hunting around for the basic stuff to put on my ME system, i.e. Antivirus Firewall Antispyware Antiphishing etc. Here's a list of my uses: Antivirus: Avast Firewall: Sygate AntiSpywa Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster AntiPhishing(?): Ad-Aware SE Personal They seem to serve me well all around. Let us know if you have trouble finding them. Harry. Just because these will be used on an older computer I would prefer to use free stuff. I have hunted around on the internet, but it seems that Win ME supported software is getting harder to find. Suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated. The system is a 433 MHz Celeron with 192 MB RAM. So don't want to install applications that will use much RAM. Thanks in advance! By the way, I need to get rid of fragments from previously installed apps, what would be a good program to use? L. |
