Problem
"Mike M" wrote: Works was never a free program and cannot legally be downloaded. As Heather has already suggested, if you can't find your Works CD amongst the recovery media supplied with your PC, try somewhere like eBay. -- Mike Maltby Mike, I got in touch with my computer whiz last night, so he is going to bring me his copy of Works 2006. Will it work with ME? Will my files convert from 2000 to 2006? Kristi Kellymutt wrote: uninstalled itself. Did you perhaps mistakenly uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs? I might have, as I've had to reboot recently and was clearing out some programs I didn't need (like Eudora and Microsoft Money). I checked the Restore CD and couldn't find works on it anywhere. Which means that your PC did not come with Win Me pre-installed as Win Me did not go RTM until 19 June 2000 (the files are however dated 6 June 2000) and was not available on new PCs until at least August 2000. -- I stand corrected, I purchased the E-Machine in April of 2001, when I moved into my new home. Do you know of anywhere I can download Works? I have several documents saved in Works that I cannot access. And I'm now on fixed income. |

Kristi I don't use Works so cannot comment other than from what I see on the web site. All I know is that there are two versions, Works and Works Suite. Works Suite 2006 comes with Microsoft Word 2002 (aka Word XP) whereas the vanilla Works 8 comes with its own cut down version of a word processor. Both should be able to read your Works 2000 documents as should any recent version of Word. Both Works 8 and Works Suite 2006 can be installed on Win Me although Encarta 2006 which forms part of Works Suite 2006 is only supported on W2K SP4 or XP. -- Mike Maltby |

I should be getting it this weekend. It's one he bought for his own, and ended up not needing it, as he ended up getting a new computer that had everything already installed. But he read the box and it said ME compatible. Thanks again, Kristi |

Problem
I know this is a bit late in posting, but I wanted to point out that
Works files have a nasty habit of being only openable in Works - Word and other Word processors rarely have the ability to open them. That said, I would recommend switching - but you can save some money and use OpenOffice.org - www.openoffice.org - it's free and can open and save Documents in word format as well as Excel format in the spreadsheet program. Heather wrote: I have absolutely no idea. And when you say *reboot*, do you mean *reinstall*?? Two entirely different actions. Why not buy a way better word processing program than Works. If you know someone who is either a student, nurse, teacher or over 65, you can get them to buy you the *academic version* of WordPerfect or MS Word. Peanuts compared to the usual price. I never used Works......ever. I am one of those oddball Wordperfect users who doesn't like MS Word either. But.....as I said before, it is not on your install CD....I have it on a separate one for MS Works. When I bought my WinME, it included about 10 different CD's for programs. You got ripped off. Good luck.....Heather "Kellymutt" wrote in message ... Thanks for all of the help. Heather, when I bought my e-machine, it came only with the restore CD. I talked to a friend last night and he's coming down from Atlanta (he is a computer whiz), I live south of there, next weekend, and is bringing me his copy of Works 2006. Will it be compatible with ME? And will it convert my Works 2000 docs to it? I've got a lot of background materials for different things in Works 2000 and there is no way I could ever recreate them. I checked the REBOOT CD last night, and there is no way to simply reinstall just the Works off it. I'd have to do a complete REBOOT, using the CD (which I've had to do twice--when it hung up for some reason). And I hate to do that simply for one little problem. Do you think the Works 2006 will work? Kristi "Heather" wrote: When I bought my WinME machine, Works was on a totally separate CD, along with a number of programs by Microsoft, IIRC. Did you not get anything besides a restore CD?? If not, then I suppose you could try eBay or some smaller computer store that might have an old copy of it. Or ask around and see if anyone happens to have it. Do you even know what version it was?? Heather "Kellymutt" wrote in message ... "Mike M" wrote: Rebooting your PC will lost nothing except for any unsaved data. I suspect you mean reinstalling. If your PC came with Works pre-installed (it is not part of Win Me) then you should also have received a copy on disk, alternatively Works is included on the recovery media supplied with the PC. Whilst it might not help you find Works you might also want to ask yourself how it is that you have lost Works? It won't have spontaneously uninstalled itself. Did you perhaps mistakenly uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs? I might have, as I've had to reboot recently and was clearing out some programs I didn't need (like Eudora and Microsoft Money).
