Win98 and IE 6.0
When checking Windows\Temporary Internet Files, I find several sub-folders
with index.dat or desktop.ini and I can not delete them from Windows. Are any of these sub-folders or files in Tempory Internet Files necessary? Can I go to DOS and Delete everything in C:Windows\Temporary Internet Files, leaving the file existing, but empty? George |

Hi George,
Yes you can drop into DOS. Instructions he http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree The folders and subfolders will be recreated automatically, with new random names. -- __________________________________________ Hyperlinks used to ensure advice is current Sandi - Microsoft MVP since 1999 http://inetexplorer.mvps.org Visit the Internet Explorer Community http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...y/default.mspx "George Lawshe" wrote in message ... I seem ti have a problem with something involving the content.IE5 folder: I
struggle to connect (by dial-up) until I delete the whole folder, then always connect on the second attempt. Is that a known issue? Also, as noted in the response to the original question, the (4) subfolders are all re-created each time I connect - this appears to be set up in the registry, which contains 4 entries, the origin of which I do not know. Which software puts such entries in the registry, and can I edit them out, to stop these sub-folders being re-created? I have only 4 sub-folders, but a friend has 30 or so - is it because he installs loads of free progs that he has more? "Sandi - Microsoft MVP" wrote: Hi George, Yes you can drop into DOS. No you cannot stop it from happening. Your friend has more folders because
he has a larger cache. Have you tried a second connection attempt without deleting your cache first? There should be no correlation between connection and cache... please define 'struggle to connect'. Precise symptoms and error messages please. -- __________________________________________ Sandi's Site has changed - for instructions on how to find old URLs, go he http://msmvps.com/spywaresucks/archi.../14/46971.aspx Hyperlinks used to ensure advice is current Sandi - Microsoft MVP since 1999 http://inetexplorer.mvps.org " icrosoft.com wrote in message ... Sandi, in answer to your questions:
1. Before connecting, if I use Explorer to look at the content of the cache files within content.IE5, it is normally true that some residual files remain - usually named eg [1], even though I have set the option to delete temporary files when closing IE 2. I always try to connect using the remote dial-in icon, before opening Outlook or IE 3. I can often try multiple times, always getting rejected (mostly with error 650, but occasionally 720 and 645 - I am not sure of the English text accompanying the errors, as my PC is all in French, but 645 seems to say the ISP machine will not accept a request for connection by network...? - My machine is not part of a LAN). 4. I then delete the content.IE5 folder (by the way, I am on IE v6) & its contents (4 sub-folders) and always get error 650 the next time I try to connect, before getting accepted at the second attempt - it could be a co-incidence, but it does always seem to happen like that! Any ideas, given this (basic) explanation? Should I have more cache files, or is that a function of the config of the PC? Brian "Sandi Hardmeier - MVP" wrote: No you cannot stop it from happening. I am sure it is coincidence - there is no correlation between the content of
your cache and the connection problems you are having. Try removing and reinstalling DUN and TCP/IP: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q181599 I would also recommend that you update your modem drivers. Another potential problem is spyware - make sure your system does not have anything nasty on it: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html -- __________________________________________ Sandi's Site has changed - for instructions on how to find old URLs, go he http://msmvps.com/spywaresucks/archi.../14/46971.aspx Hyperlinks used to ensure advice is current Sandi - Microsoft MVP since 1999 http://inetexplorer.mvps.org " icrosoft.com wrote in message ...
