Long Wait-Time to Connect to Internet ?
We have a vacation cabin in a very rural area. We have a dialup connection, and the speed varies, but is usually around 28k. Based on some research and in talking with others in the county, it appears there is no cure for this, as our home is very far away from the telephone central office or connection point. What we cannot understand is that it takes so very long to **initially connect** to the isp. It sometimes takes 10 or up to 15 minutes to connect. Every now and then, it will connect in 1 or 2 minutes, but it is never fast. I wondered is there are some modem settings that we could check and/or if there is a webpage that might discuss this. I have done many Google searches, but ALL of them talk about the overall speed of the connection itself, which is not what I am asking about. I am trying to improve the amount of time that it takes to make the **initial** connect to the isp. Any help on this one ?? Thanks for any input or ideas !! --James-- |

Have the same problem in rural Kentucky..
I have found that the telephone ckts have varying impedence due to length, resistance, water and bad splices.. The phone company (BellSouth) says their only required to supply a 9600 bit rate to make the FCC happy.. And that I can go Fish.. (or another slang term) if I want better... You might consider Sprint wireless.. Its faster and more dependable.. or just live with the slow connections and slower downloads Another help would be to turn off your browsers image loading feature, loads only text.. That will speed up downloads of news faster.. Sorry, RTS "James Nipper" wrote in message ... We have a vacation cabin in a very rural area. At least you have the bourbon. I have found that the telephone ckts have varying impedence due to length, resistance, water and bad splices.. No wonder you guys are so keen on bourbon! (I may be projecting, here!) Shane |

connect** to the isp. It sometimes takes 10 or up to 15 minutes to connect. Every now and then, it will connect in 1 or 2 minutes, but it is never fast. If you are referring to the time to get the dialling tone - you could try confirming the modem connection speed itself, before worrying too much about connecting to the web, confirm that the modem is at least connecting and dialling correctly. Run dialer.exe (note only one L) and confirm that the modem connects to your line and dials. (NB this is a dialler - NOT a call handler utility). Dial your own number (or a convenient mobile phone), give it a few seconds and then lift your (adjacent) telephone handset and listen for the engaged signal. If you are lucky, you may even be able to monitor the connection and dialling process by listening to the handset. If dialer.exe does not connect immediately, you need to continue to troubleshoot your modem. If you can 'borrow' a laptop, try substituting it and see if there is an improvement.
