Startup Errors
I have a Win98SE computer that gives me the following
error on startup: "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows system registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you delete this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. dfx.vxd Press any key to continue." Then on login it gives me these 2 errors: "Cannot find the file 'vshldwin.exe' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available." "Could not load or run 'vshldwin.exe' specified in the WIN.INI file. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the WIN.INI file." Am I correct to assume that these 3 error messages all refer to the same problem? If so, what can I do to fix it? I have no idea what this vshldwin.exe file refers to or what it is used for. How do I remove the reference to it in both the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Try putting it back from CD with sfc.exe vshldwin.exe sounds as a part of McAfee virusscanner. That should not be related. Try reinstalling, if you have McAfee. Maybe you didn't shutdown well and scandisk has 'repaired' them away? You can open system.ini and win.ini with notepad (they are both in \windows directory), and put a ; before the line in which they are referenced. |
