Windows Explorer running slow
Recently after removing old application not being used the
Windows Explorer runs extremely slow. I may have removed a critical file, but I don't know how to check. When I start Explorer (or My Computer) it takes about a minute to open. Once started when I select a folder it takes another minute to display it's contents. I tried to reload WIN98 SE but I get this error messsage: "invalid VxD dynamic link call from VWIN32(01) + 00000714 to device "0009", service 1 Your Windows configuration is invalid. Run the Windows setup program again to correct this problem" I've tried to reload WIN98 SE several times with no success. Any help is greatly appreciated. Ed |

Ed Try running Scandisk from Dos then Defrag from Windows. In Defrag Settings un-check "Arrange programs so they start faster" That can take a long time and any benefit is negligible. I have ran scandisk, disk defrag, system file checker and none of the programs found errors. I thought a reload of WIN98 would fix it, but it doesn't complete the reload and reports the error above. |

An MS article says that error can be caused by a damaged registry file. Try booting to Dos and enter Scanreg /restore. Choose a CAB file backup from before the problem. Re-boot. You may get a message about a missing file because some have been deleted but that can be fixed. You can restore the current registry the same way if needed. If the machine is still slow and you want to re-install, boot with a Win98 Startup diskette and run Setup from Dos. If Setup tries to install into a Windows.000 or similar folder change it to C:\Windows. Your CDrom drive letter may temporarily be one higher. e.g. D: to E: Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.epix.net/~bwatt/ |
