Default Found New HArdware Message

Hi-The last few days I have been receiving the message-
Windows found new hardware on my computer-but it does not
list the hardware. It asks me if I would like to do an
automatic search for a better driver or specify the
location of the driver. I hit automatic search-then it
says please wait while Window searches for software and it
shows the A:. Then it says "unable to locate software for
this device." Then it says "if you did not want to install
click Finish." When I click Finish it comes up with an
error message that says SUREGCREATEKEY failed!. The
problem is I have not installed any new ahrdware on my
computer recently. I also noticed now that I cannot print-
my printer works, I did a test but when I click the print
command on my computer-it brings up the printer symbol
like it is going to print then dissapears. I am wondering
if the two are conencted. Any advice? Thanks!

The error message "SURegCreateKey Failed" is usually caused by having some
other background application running that is preventing the installation
program from modifying the registry. I would recommend that when attempting
to carry out your install you have no other applications running and ensure
that any Symantec products are totally disabled (and preferably for the health
of you system permanently disabled).

See MS KB 305668 - ""SURegCreateKey Failed" Error Message Appears When
Installing a Program" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=305668).

Thanks for your help-I tried doing the cleanboot-but the
computer freezes up on me & I can't continue. The only
driver that I can think of on my computer would be photo
card reader for my digital camera-but that has been on for
a while. I also have a spysweeper installed but it is not
open when I turn on the computer. I also noticed that
when I turn on the computer it gives me a message that
says "unable to process registry. May be fixed by
rebooting to the command prompt-SCANREG/FIX. I tried
getting to DOS by clicking F8 but that doesn't work. Any
other suggestions. Thanks again.

F8 won't take you to DOS it will take you to Safe Mode.

To boot to DOS use a
floppy.

You need to use a bootable floppy to boot to a DOS prompt. F8 takes you to
Safe Mode not DOS. However if you can boot Win Me you can run SCANREG /FIX
by entering it in the Run box (Start | Run) and clicking OK. Scanreg will
run, try to repair any damage to the registry after which the system will
reboot.
