please help me pointer keeps freezing
Hi all
I hope someone can please help me. I have WIN ME, HP computer, about 3 yrs. old. 30 Gig hard drive, 128 mb memory, 800 MGH IE 5.5 Problem is for about the last 3 weeks I can only use it for about 20 min. or so (after a fresh reboot) and then my pointer freezes up. ctr alt del doesn't work nor turning off hard drive. I actually have to turn the power bar off and then back on to get computer to restart. I have run adaware (spyware) and also McAfee (viurs) and nothing shows up. I also had another problem when I went to do a restore in my system tools menu the system restore menu was gone. So I tried restoring from the Help Page. In the meantime I found some info on how to get restore menu back. It is now in the menu of system tools. But of course all my previous restore points are gone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am fairly new to computers and very frustrated because I use my computer probably 4 hrs a day. Thanks in advance, I will await your replies with my fingers crossed. |

Right click on "My Computer" (on your computer, g), select Properties and
then the Performance tab. Under Advanced Settings, left click on the "Graphics" button. The Advanced Graphics Settings window will open, move the Hardware Acceleration slider to one notch above "None" and 'OK" out. If this stops the problem with the mouse pointer, suspect a need for updated drivers for your mouse and/or graphics card. I was having similar problems, due to an old graphics card for which there were no new drivers and had to get a new card with more memory (the old one was a 16M and the new one is 32M). If you have to resort to a new graphics card and plan to get something above 32M, be sure to look into the output capabilities of your Power Supply. As in my case, the PS was not sufficient to handle the extra wattage requirements of a 64+ Meg video card.....hence, the 32M.
