Default Wireless with Win 98?

Will Windows 98 Second Edition allow me to set up a
wireless 802.1b network? My laptop with Win 98 (first
version) will not connect to the router although it shows
a good signal. I was told to upgrade to the Second
Edition for this problem. I am using an older laptop,
Armada 1700, 266mhz with built-in pcmcia slots. The
pcmcia card shows good connection and data rate but still
nothing. Help?

Both Windows 98 original and Windows 98 Second Edition can use a
wireless 802.11b network. You need these two things:

1. A wireless network card that has a driver program for your
version.

2. A 32-bit Cardbus slot if the card requires it.

Most cards that I've seen support Windows 98 Second Edition.

I've used these wireless network cards successfully on Windows 98
original:

USB: Netgear MA101, Netgear MA111
Cardbus: Netgear MA401, Microsoft MN-520

According to their web pages, these adapters should work on Windows 98
original, too:

Cardbus: Orinoco Classic Gold PC Card
PCI: Netgear MA311, Orinoco 11b

Hi,

In my experience on the MA-111 connected to a Satellite
laptop runnning windows 98, the laptop recognised the
adapter, but when I restart, it is identified as "unknown
USB device" and I'm unable to connect to the network.

Also, when the Netgear MA-111 is still identified
properly, it can log on to the router but it cannot see
other computers on the network...other computers can see
each other but not the laptop...

I wonder how you manage to run the adapter smoothly on
Windows 98 first edition?

Thanks,

Sam

My MA111 has worked fine on a Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop. I just
installed it on a Dell Dimension L1000r desktop. It took three
separate installs (with un-installs in between) and several reboots to
get the drivers (Version 1.1) working. The first two installs showed
! in Device Manager for the adapter and said that the drivers couldn't
start.

Also, when the Netgear MA-111 is still identified
properly, it can log on to the router but it cannot see
other computers on the network...other computers can see
each other but not the laptop...

If it can log onto the router, the MA111 is working fine. Something
else is causing the problems with computers seeing each other.

I wonder how you manage to run the adapter smoothly on
Windows 98 first edition?

Be sure to install the driver and the wireless configuration program
before connecting the MA111 for the first time. After that, plug the
adapter in after Windows 98 has finished booting, and unplug it before
shutting down -- having the adapter connected during startup/shutdown
can cause system crashes or hangs.

Thanks,

Sam
