My Keyboard and Mouse are dying on and off
Hi Noel :-)
Get the updates from the Compaq site, rather than the VIA site - CQ have a habit of 'customising' everything in sight. If the CQ ones don't improve the problem, then use the VIA ones (after creating a Restore point, of course!g) 'k....will do, and I'll check for the dupes on the mouse too. And yes....I will do a RP. I do that a couple times a day anyway anymore, just to be sure. I've got a whole 3 days worth again now. Woohoooo!! G Yeah, they do like to be 'unique'. Especially now that they've been mingled with HP. Thanks Noel. Jan -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Jan Il" wrote in message ... Hi Mike :-) Jan, Could be problems with the USB chipset and your motherboard drivers. For example there have been quite a few problems reported with USB when using motherboards using a VIA chipset. These problems are often fixed by installing the latest VIA driver set. I'll have to find out what kind of Motherboard I have first. I ran a Belarc, and it did show a lot of my stuff, but, I'm not sure, as I did not see anything that said Motherboard, just Main Circuit Board - Compaq 06E4h. I found where I can download the VIA driver update, but, have to be sure of the Motherboard type. I'll see if I can get this updated and see how it does. The mouse is still holding since the driver update. Thank you for your help. Jan Hi Mike :-) 'k....I've been monitoring what I have been doing when the keyboard goes dead, and it seems to happen when I have more than one window 2 windows open in OE, then open a window on IE. It just started recently while under these circumstances, which I have done often before the problem started. It is not from over heating, I've checked on that, and the mouse seems not to be going dead on me anymore now. Whew!! It's reallyyy bad when I can't talk with *both* hands are tied. 8-o Now.......I've been thinking (I know, very dangerous territory for me), I updated the driver for the mouse, so he's able to driver by himself now, but, I can't update the driver for the keyboard. So...any thoughts on this? Ahmm....that you can print on the ng.....that is? ;-) Thank you for your time and help, I really appreciate it. Jan Jan, You have no restore points because something you are doing, unintentionally of course, is resetting system restore (each time you boot your system). What do you have in the way of removable disks or are you multi-booting in some way? As for your mouse and keyboard problems are, this could be hardware failure of some sort or allied in some way to why system restore is also resetting itself. Hi all - I've been having a problem with my keyboard and mouse dying while in use. This happens at least once a day, sometimes 2 times. Not at the same time though. They just stop working. When I reboot, all is fine. The keyboard is a MS Elite, and the mouse is a Logitech cordless optical, ClickIt. Both are USB connected. It just started about two weeks ago, and there are no error messages. I have done the usual troubleshooting, tested the USB adaptors and all. I find it strange that they just stop, as if they were suddenly disconnected. Also, that it does not happen at the same time. I did try to roll back to a time before it started, but......well.......sigh......no RP's......again. I'd truly appreciate any suggestions or information on what might be causing the problems. Best regards. Jan |

Hi Noel,
'k...here's the info I got from Compaq: 'I understand that you need Via Chipset drivers for Presario 5WV261. Following are the Chipset information of your Presario. North Bridge == Via VT8363/VT8365 (KZ133/KM133) South Bridge == Via VT82C686A You can download updated/complete version of Chipset drivers from the following URL link: http://ranger.s3graphics.com/viaarena/370drv/130103Util.zip' So......which one do I need? The North Bridge, or the South Bridge? Thank goodness they didn't send the East and West Bridges. Then I would have a fine time trying to figure out which direction to go first. ?? g I'm not going to do anything until I get the ok from you, as if they look right, as I know nufin' of such things. Hi Jan,
Updating both is the best idea... that URL isn't Compaq specific as far as I can tell, though; just generic "S3 Savage Pro Graphics" Chipset MB drivers from May 2003.
