Noel, my Boot Disk/DOS expertise is poor, but before a question I have
completed all scans, dis-abling, etc.
ie6setup.exe ver 6_sp1 480-79324 KB Dn-Loaded to My Documents ( I'm
confused about instruction to "Find the Disk/Drive that you put the
installer into" - Was Dn-Loading ie6setup.exe to My Documents OK?)
Now, I did Re-Start with Me Start-up Disk in A: and saw the 3 choices incl
Without CD-Rom Support;
It did some things by itself when I Did Not select a choice but when I
removed Floppy, went to C:\ , I only knew to type Windows.
Got message ...Not Ready Reading Drive A Abort Retry Fail
So, I need actual steps after removing Me Start Disk (and doing the RESTORE
steps) to get back into Windows. Ready to try after that.
Thanks!

Craig
I'm a little concerned that you may only have downloaded the 458KB stub for
the IE setup - and not the whole program (which should be around 15MB+) The
My Documents folder is fine for the files (make sure that they go into a
subfolder within it, though)

Removing the floppy drive before doing anything, and getting that message,
does at least show that you've booted properly to the floppy rather than
anything else!g
You need to leave the floppy in the drive until you want to reboot.
leave the disk in, and type C: [followed by Enter]
you should get a C:\ prompt
if you now type CD WINDOWS [Enter] - the prompt should change to
C:\WINDOWS - now type DIR and hit [Enter] - you should end up with a
seemingly never-ending list of the files in the Windows folder.
That essentially 'proves' the floppy works properly for use later if
necessary.
If you now take the floppy out, and reboot, you should end up back in
Windows (to reboot, just hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, or even better, hit the power
button, and shut the machine down for a minute or two while you make
yourself a drink!g - Using the power button to power down is fine in DOS,
as any OS activity is usually self-evident)

Noel, In IE Downloads section Only IE6 SP1 is referred to and it says This
version includes a full installation of the Web browser and the most recent
version of Outlook Express, the e-mail client that is included with Internet
Explorer.
The asterick after "480 - 79324 KB says "Download file size depends on
"selected Download components, yet no choices are given - Only ie6setup.exe
which Downloads quickly and must be only a bridge for Downloading the rest

on demand.
Nothing in IE Downloads says "I'm the entire IE6 SP1 application".
I'll post on the Internet Explorer Group and see if someone knows what to
do. Will advise asap. Thanks!

what do you make of that?

That what I thought was relatively straightforward apparently is not. See
e) below which provides the solution to the problem.

a) Download ie6setup.exe to a folder such as IE6 located in My Documents
b) Double click ie6setup.exe to run
c) Click "I accept the agreement" and then Next
d) Select Install Minimal or customize and then click Next
e) Click Advanced and check the box "Download only" and then click OK
f) Select Win Me and click Next
12.7MB or so later you should have what you want.

Sorry not to have spelt the procedure out in full in my previous post.

Mike, things were Downloading fine (12.7 MB displayed / then 13011 KB) but
then it asked "Do you want to Install & Run Internet Explorer Service Pack
1?"
I said No, and then it falls apart. Error msg: "Unable to Download
Components; make sure Internet Connection OK, etc."
Surely Install & Run if Chosen is not related to Download - Install Later.
When I tried ie6setup.exe again it gives a choice to Resume or Start
Over; I Started Over & reached same Dead-end over it wanting to Install & Run.
After the Advanced tab was clk'd and I chose Download Only, it created a
Windows\Windows Update Setup Files Folder where it said to Clk ie6setup.exe
when ready. That's where I've been operating from -

Any other ideas?

Rather than clicking No click Yes. The download continues and when
finished presents you with the following:
"Setup has finished downloading from the Windows Update.
Run "ie6setup.exe from the "folder you downloaded the files to" folder
when ready to complete Setup".
and an OK button.

BTW in "f" in my previous post I forgot to mention that you have the
ability to choose the folder to which the files are downloaded. It is
best to make this the folder containing ie6setup.exe.

Well, your mention to Download to where ie6setup is, since I had
mentioned 2 places I wasn't sure if you meant to Download to the Special
Folder I created but I moved the Windows Update Setup File back over to My
Documents\IE6SP1 I created and the Download Did Not Like it. Moved all back
to Windows and it completed. I Clk the ie6setup.exe to Finish.
The fact that Install & Run is part of Download and Install later
"logic" proves that software engineers clearly hate people of low to average
expertise.
Will advise when I get the nerve to start the Delete/Re-Install. Many
Thanks for your patience.

Mike, things were Downloading fine (12.7 MB displayed / then 13011

Service Pack 1?"
I said No, and then it falls apart. Error msg: "Unable to Download
Components; make sure Internet Connection OK, etc."
Surely Install & Run if Chosen is not related to Download - Install
Later. When I tried ie6setup.exe again it gives a choice to
Resume or Start Over; I Started Over & reached same Dead-end over it
wanting to Install & Run. After the Advanced tab was clk'd and I
chose Download Only, it created a Windows\Windows Update Setup Files
Folder where it said to Clk ie6setup.exe
when ready. That's where I've been operating from -

Any other ideas?

Mike / Noel: IE6 Re-Installed & working but Office Updates still Freezes at
51%;
The following has occurred:
The 329115 Patch in Noel's copy-righted Instructions would always Default to
Windows Update when the 329115 DnLoad link was clk'd, so I updated what it
gave;
Windows KEEPS saying KB837009 (OE SP1) is a Critical Update Required even
after I installed it 3 times ( showed Successful & is in History 3 times).
Only once did Win Update let me go to 329115 page and it finally DnLoaded;
Error Msg when 329115.EXE Clk'd on Desktop: "Q329115.EXE File is Linked to
Missing export NTDLL.DLL:strstr" ; (I see NTDLL.DLL in Windows\System)
Behind that Error Block is: "A Device attached to the System is not
functioning" (and the C:\Windows\Desktop Path for 329115.EXE is the header on
that block).
Maybe I can just look at Office Downloads & go by dates to manually Update;
Any idea How to Tell Win Updates that KB837009 OESP1 is Loaded?
Thanks for all that you did!!
